Two Day's Worth

Rarotonga, Southern Cook Islands, Cook Islands
Well I can think of worse places to be on wet and windy days, and over the last two days we have had plenty of time to do just that. The storms that came in a couple of days ago have not left us so our excursions are limited to breaks in the weather or anywhere under cover. That's not a complaint, this place still exudes the languid pace and lifestyle no matter what the weather. People just get on with business and say to us " It's unusual to be like this at this time of the year" and I reply, "Thanks, that's just what I wanted to hear"
To which they respond, "How long are you here?"
"Till Friday" I say
"Oh that's ok, it'll be sunny by then"
"Thanks" I say, "I love getting on a plane and flying away from an island holiday in bright sunshine . It makes up for the days of watching the rain belt down"
Not that I'm complaining.
We did manage to get out and do some shopping and, in a couple of sunny breaks jump in the beach on both sides of the island. Unfortunately, the weather has churned the ocean up and rather than the crystal clear water that we swam in the first day, visibility was down to less than an arm's length. So sorry, although I had the Hasselblad 575 Auto Shutter Underwater Master charged and ready to shoot, underwater photography was pointless.
So the last couple of days have been quiet, and I won't bore you with the latest historical titbit I uncovered featuring a previously unknown sibling. I'll just say, Bob Gaugin, try as he did, could not emulate his famous brother's success, though some of his drawings of coconuts have been used as placemat designs for the tourist trade.
Security around here, and particularly around their government buildings is very good. It is covert to be almost imperceptible. We stopped outside their House of Parliament, walked around and took some photos without once being aware of the incredibly tight security that must surround the place . Imposing, palatial, grand, impressive, all words that really don't belong in a sentence regarding the Cook Islands House of Parliament - check out the photo.
The one thing we haven't attempted yet is tackling the public transport system around here. The New York subway system it ain't, but it has a complexity all it's own. It's based on a clock. That is, there are two routes, one bus has "Clockwise" on its front and the other, you guessed it, "Anti- Clockwise". Ah the joys of having only one road around an island, and it did explain something I have been noticing. Every now and again I have seen the odd person with one arm obviously longer and larger than the other. I think they should allow the drivers to change routes from time to time.
The final highlight was dinner last night. In Jane's words, " one of the best seafood platters I have ever eaten" and as I try to keep this blog child friendly, I won't repeat some of the other descriptions she gave it, this I do agree though, it was very, very good. Speak to you tomorrow.
