Flores, Petén, Guatemala
Our next stop is the charming island-town of Flores, the last town to be conquered by the Spanish. It is situated in the centre of Lake Peten Itzá.

Flores - old part of the city is located on an island on Lake Peten Itza, connected to the mainland by a short causeway. On the mainland is the suburb Santa Elena and, to the West, a contiguous municipality San Benito.

In Pre-Columbian times, Flores was the Maya city of Nojpetén. Thanks Mr Wikipedia.

Located on an island Flores is charming and has plenty of character. Essentially there is one main narrow cobble stoned road circling around the island itself with the church and plaza / basket ball court up high right in the centre of the island. With the recent rain you can see that part of the road was underwater.

Plenty of small hotels and restaurants dotted the outer road with their lovely unblocked views looking over the lake. Loved the brightly painted buildings and narrow cobble stone alleyways connecting the island together.

Again I had 3 beds to choose from with great fast wi fi internet here compared to the previous few nights.

That night we celebrated my birthday at la Luna and at my request it was done in a very low key way. This was a special mile stone one but enough of that! Dinner was fried fish with garlic and rice Q 130 / NZ $ 20 / US $ 16.50. That coupled with a glass of cold hibiscus tea juice was sufficient. The fish was local and came cooked whole. Great.
