Macaw @ The Catamaram Island Hotel

The Catamaran Island hotel has 2 macaws.

Just skip this entry if you want to. Yes, there are 59 or so images here of just 2 birds!

Why so many? Well, the truth is that I was trying to take the photo of them MINUS the chicken wire fence. Finally worked out what to do and hopefully you will enjoy the final results. I just love the birds feather colours. A local off one of the yachts told me while I was trying to take these photos that the 2 macaws were being really co-operative for me. Plus the sun was low so that added to the vibrancy of their colours. Perhaps they knew what I was trying to do!

An additional challenge was trying keep their eyes in the centre of the chicken wire fence 6 sided polygon.

I tried initially using the ‘Set the AF point selection’ to manual single point focusing verses the automatic 9 point but then changed to manual focus which gave me more control.

So the solution was:
- manual focus.
- Aperture of 5.6 which is as small as I can go on my 200 mm long lens.
- Use as much as possible the long lens part of my 18 - 200 lens and
- Finally ideally wait till they were furthest away from the chicken wire fencing closest to me ie when they were sitting on a perch or were on the chicken fence on the opposite side of the cage.

Macaws Very .clever of you to work that one out Bruce. glorious colours. Do you remember my prints that I took out of my large A3 book of Edward Lear prints of birds? He actually went out into the bush and painted them there, well before photography,
