Rio Dulce to Antigua via slow thru Guatemala City

Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala
Another relocate day. This time it is from Rio Dulce to Antigua and could be a long day with traffic delays, accidents etc so let's see what this day reveals to us.

Sunrise and the local fishermen were out, 7 am buffet breakfast (yummy!) and yes, double helpings to set me up for the day.

Back on the boat at 7.40 am for the short hop back over to Rio Dulce and onto our private mini van. Left at 8 am for a trip that could be as short as 7 hours or as long as 9 hours.

The route that we had to travel is between 2 ports so the road at times was dominated by these huge articulated semi-trailers.

Leaving Rio Dulce I wondered why the cars and buses were stopped at the top of the bridge just out of town. Of course … a natural viewing spot looking down and over the lake below. How bizarre.

No one wanted the front seat so I had the luxury of sitting in the 'suicide seat', in the middle with both a view out of the front windscreen and was able to open the left hand window to take photos with no glass plus it allowed that fresh air in. Really wonderful.

Passed plantations, many pineapple, banana and coconut roadside stalls and soon the landscape became a bit barren.

Just one hold up before Guatemala City and it wasn’t an accident as first feared but some form of road works.

Petrol stations galore, petrol is sold in gallons which is about $1 a litre.

One spot of the journey there were truck / car wash stations along the side of the road - one after another.

Had 2 toilet stops before Guatemala City as Bec said we are not stopping in this city for such bodily necessities.

You may be wondering why are there photos of “auto hotels“. Saw them several days ago. Plain and at times brightly painted buildings with no windows. Well let's just say they are rented by the hour!

The photos partially shows the change in traffic and yes, it was at times slow to pass though one side of Guatemala City. This city that has some 7 million people.

Saw for the first time this huge long digital bill board that stretched across the whole road.
