Rio Dulce, United States
Left Flores10 minutes early at 10 to 7 en route to Rio Dulce and thank goodness for this.

Along the way an articulated truck had just turned over a few minutes before us arriving onto the scene. Thank goodness for the narrowness of the van or else we would have been stuck there for hours. The police had not even arrived when we quickly sneaked passed the accident scene. Wonder if the driver escaped OK? Judging by the bystanders just standing around I think so.

Arrived at Rio Dulce, unloaded the van and then loaded the boat for the few minutes crossing to our overnight stay at Catamaran Island Hotel. Actually it is not really an island. No vehicle access to the peninsular. First it was a slight detour to see the castle or Castillo de San Felipe. The covered boat sheds with 4 boats in it belongs to the Guatemala's President.

We all got over the water cabins. Just like Tahiti but I make no secret that I think that the Tahiti over water bungalows would be much better than these cabins. Don't get me wrong, my cabin 'Hotel’ was really nice.

Back into the boat for those who wanted to and the 4 hour round trip to Caribbean seaside port of Livingstone.

Rain coat at the ready and soon these were needed plus the provided large plastic sheet. It was the driving rain on the face that felt like pins were being driven in. Ouch! Part of the pain on the face was the speed that the boat was going. The lake was flat and the 115 hp engine certainly pushed us along at a fair speed - 90 km a hour.

With the mountains surrounding, yachts and boats from around the world find this place a real haven from the hurricane season out in the Caribbean Sea.

Iguanas high up in the tree branches plus plenty of white herons. Passed through these lovely water lilly ponds.

Sea shell brackets from the local children for just Q 10 / NZ $ 1.50 / US $ 1.30.
