Havana, La Habana, Cuba
Standing under a tree away from one of the passing showers at 20 metre Estatua de Chrusto, the CUC$6 / US$6 / NZ$9.25 lunch for me was a ham and cheese sandwich and can of local Cola. From here the views back to Havana spread beneath us. Coming in from the west were the black shower clouds and sure enough the heavens soon opened.

The Christ of Havana is a colossal sculpture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the work of sculptor Cuban Jilma Wood. The statue was made of marble from Carrara, the same that was used in the monuments of the Colon Cemetery in Havana. The image is about 20 meters high and rests on a base of three meters in which its creator buried diverse objects of the time. Its approximate weight is about 320 tons. The statue consists of 67 pieces that were brought from Italy, since it was carved in Rome and there blessed by Pope Pius XII.

The image, located in the village of White House in the town of Regla, was located on the hill of La Cabaña on December 24 , Christmas Eve of 1958. Just fifteen days after his inauguration, January 8 of 1959, Fidel Castro entered Havana after finishing with the government of Fulgencio Batista by the Cuban Revolution. The image was hit by lightning three times-in 1961, 1962 and 1986 before it was located a lightning rod.

This image was blessed by Cardinal Arteaga, the 25th of December of 1958, against their will, due to the bad relations that had the prelate with the dictator Fulgencio Batista, who sought to win popular support for the establishment of such a beautiful sculpture. After 1959 was almost covered, exprofeso with trees and was not visited, for being inside a military zone. The religious freedom of the 90s and tourism overturned this decision and in the Easter of 1996 took place one ordeal and an apology for a Catholic youth habaneros.

The sculpture is 51 meters above sea level, allowing Havana to see the sculpture from many parts of the city; the figure of Christ is standing with one hand raised in blessing and the other in the chest facing the city, this work is left with empty eyes that give the impression of looking at everyone everywhere to be seen. From the site of Christ of Havana a view of the entire appreciated Havana.
