Cayo Levisa, Pinar del Río, Cuba
Breakfast is ready like the other places at 7 am (7:00). Best to be there early.

An 8.30 am (8:30) departure for the hour drive to Cayo Levisa passing a couple of small villages and their rich agricultural fields.

A half hour wait before the boat departed Palma Arabia for Cayo Levisa at 10 am (10:00). The sea was really flat for the 35 minute crossing. On landing crossing over the mangroves on a wooden broad-walk to the beach on the northern side of the island. Then a briefing of the activities and where things were located. Lunch at 1.30 pm (1:30).

Decided on the 11.30 am (11:30) CUC$18 / US$18 / NZ$ 28 snorkelling option off the nearby coral reef. It ended up with a 45 min snorkel where I followed most of the time above the 3 Lisa, Jennifer and another tourist plus their guide who had dived down to about 10-12 metres in crystal clear waters. They paid CUC$50 / US$50 / NZ$77 which included the equipment hire.

Back in time for the 1.30 pm (13:30) lunch and for most we took the spaghetti that was on the buffet.

More frequented than Cayo Jutías and perhaps still more splendid, Cayo Levisa sports a beach-bungalow-style hotel, basic restaurant and fully equipped diving center, yet still manages to feel relatively isolated. Separation from the mainland obviously helps. Unlike other Cuban keys, there's no causeway here, and visitors must make the 35-minute journey by boat from Palma Rubia. It's a worthwhile trip: 3km of sugar-white sand and sapphire waters earmark Cayo Levisa as Pinar del Río's best beach. American writer Ernest Hemingway first 'discovered' the area, part of the Archipiélago de los Colorados, in the early 1940s after he set up a fishing camp on Cayo Paraíso, a smaller coral island 10km to the east. These days Levisa attracts up to 100 visitors daily as well as the 50-plus hotel guests. While you won't feel like an errant Robinson Crusoe here, you should find time (and space) for plenty of rest and relaxation.
