Lima, Lima, Peru
The yellow and white colonial San Francisco complex consists of an earthquake resistant quincha or mixture of rushes, mud and plaster making the abode bricks. It was a church, convent and chapels of La Soledad and El Milagro. Unfortunately it was a "NO camera" inside. I have been to hundreds of churches and cathedrals around the world and at times feel that I am "churches and cathedrals out" but this one has to be in the top 3. Not often I would say "WOW" as I enter a room but in this case I did that several times.

The library or Bibliothèque was my favourite with the rows of ancient century old books and manuscripts lined up on their wooden shelves. With the dry atmosphere they haven't crumbled. That with the 2 narrow spiral wooden staircases leading up to the upper level with even more books stacked up. At the front were what I will call two "big print" books open. Why such a large print size I do not know.

The convent cloister and garden with the glazed blue Sevillan tiled patio and columns, painted walls with their frescoes and mahogany machimbrado ceiling put together with no nails.

Then there was this huge wooden dome made with no nails above one of the stairways.

The high altar in the church, a room with Reuben's huge 11 paintings (one has been stolen) of the "Passion of Christ" series, the last supper with a bit of artist licence - a "Cuy" Guinea Pig in the middle of the table, the local fruits, children. Plus no artists signature. One theory is the guys to the left are a self-portrait of the artists themselves.

Finally it was down into the deep and eerie catacombs. With a network of inter connecting tunnels, who knows how many thousands of skeletons are here. Perhaps 70,000? Bodies were laid on top of each other, dusted with lime and then when decayed were sorted and stored. The bones were neatly lined up and the skulls and femurs arranged in a circular pattern. "Eerie" is one word to describe this.

Two post cards will have to suffice for what I was not able to photograph. Then there is always google images!
