Well I survived the 3 day travel from Kande Beach to Livingstone (L'stone) even with a 5.40 am departure from our Eureka campsite just outside Lusaka. That was a 4.30 am wake up morning. I understand that we have even more of these early morning wake ups later in the trip to look forward to!!!! Why get up so early one may ask? We had only a shortish 450 km drive.
This meant that we got to L'stone at lunchtime and as a whole group could go immediately to the Mosi-O-Tunya or Smoke that Thunders ie Victoria Falls.
While it was past the high rainy season, it certainly still very impressive with the sheer volume of water spilling over the top from what appears to be a gentle flowing Zambezi River just before the lip of the Falls. Yes, as expected we all got wet with water cascading down from the top as well as water being blown up from below. A raincoat helped a little bit. I could have taken my shampoo and had a good shower!!! Unfortunately the sun was in front of us so the photos and video clips are not the best. With us being early that morning, it meant that we had 3 full days to fill in with the various optional activities available. Thank you Tom and Mandy for getting us up so early!
Hint to those heading here: Start off by turning left as you enter the park and go along towards the road bridge crossing over to Zimbabwe: "bridge trail". Go to the very end of the path for the distant view of the falls. Don't worry about the many turnouts as you walk along. If need you can always call into these on the way back, but the best view by far is at the very end. Otherwise you will waste time. Then if you think you have enough time, walk down to the river level itself: "boiling pot" which lazy me did not go all the 629 meters or 687 yards way down as you just had to climb up to the top again. I went half way down then realised that I had to ration the just over hour that we had here.
Head to the top of the fall and if the river level is low you will be lucky enough to swim in the pool right at the top of the fall. We couldn't as the rainy season had just finished and the river level was still very high and much flowing over the top.
Leave the walk over the bridge to the island where you will get wet till last. That to me was by far the best ... You can even see the many people bungy jumping from here.
Smoke that certainly Thunders = Victoria Falls
