Swimming with the penguins

Bartolome Is , Galápagos, Ecuador
My last snorkelling and what will be seen? Besides the many fishes, more sharks, sea turtles or hopefully penguins?

As we took the zodiac over to the beach on Bartolome Is, we saw a couple of Galapagos penguins on the rock just beneath Pinnacle Rock, the remains of an eroded tuff cone. The one that looks like the leaning tower of Pisa.

While some saw more white tip sharks, I saw the penguin by the edge of the rock. Will it jump into the water or not? We waited and waited and eventually it did jump into the water. I was expecting the penguin to swim quickly away like it did this morning but no, it swam towards me and allowed me for well over 10 minutes to swim besides it and video it. It was oh so close that I could touch it as the video will show.

Towards the end another penguin joined this one so the ending of my wonderful snorkelling time was seeing two penguins swim away into the distance. These Galapagos penguins are the only ones that are north of the equator so are really special.

What a wonderful closing episode to my Galapagos adventure.
