Day 1 at Charleville

Charleville, Queensland, Australia
To complement the viewing of the night sky last evening, this morning we returned to the Cosmos Centre for a day viewing of the Sun.
It was a much smaller group than last night, being just 8 and we used a single small telescope fitted with a special filter to protect our eyes from damage. Our guide spoke about many aspects of the Sun, particularly comparing it to other stars on the solar system. We viewed the Sun with a selection of lenses, each one progressing to give greater magnification to allow us to see several solar flares on the Sun's outer edge. As can be seen, we were even able to capture some of the flares using our camera on the telescope eyepiece.
After viewing some interesting presentations in the remainder of the Cosmos Centre, we returned to the Charleville CBD in search of some lunch, but noted construction had begun on what apparently will be a planetarium. We had lunch at the renowned Heinemann's bakery and then did a walk around the area where we saw "Charlee", who is apparently a cousin of the iconic Commonwealth Games mascot, Matilda.
At the Cosmos Centre we'd purchased a Charleville audio tour on CD, complete with map and following that provided an interesting commentary of historical features around the town. One stop was at a couple of vortex rainmaking guns. These were from an experiment conducted in 1902 aimed at breaking one of the areas worst ever droughts. Unfortunately the experiment led by the then Queensland Government Meteorologist Clement Wragge using six guns failed to produce the much anticipated rain.
Last port of call on the tour was the Warrego River. We last saw the Warrego River at Cunnamulla during "happy hour" at the Warrego Riverside Caravan Park. Tonight it is spit roast night at Bailey Bar. So we joined several other caravaners from the park plus some others staying at another park, including a bus load on tour, for a two course dinner and some good conversation. It was good to hear the travel stories from others who have come from where we're going and pick up some tips.
