A Day Around Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach, Queensland, Australia
The day began with pancakes for breakfast and they were delicious. On leaving Townsville we found one of the caravan's four brake lights wasn't working and so after breakfast we did some investigation. It turned out that it was just a blown globe so we drove to through Airlie Beach to Cannonvale where there was a Supercheap Auto shop next to a small shopping centre. Apart from the replacement globe we bought a suncreen for the car windscreen. In the shopping centre we bought ingredients to make hot dogs, as well as a custard tart topped with apple for lunch. We went via the Airlie marina on the way back to the van and there were some pretty impressive vessels there.
After lunch we drove the 10km down to Shute Harbour which is a port facility for the transfer of visitors to the Whitsunday Islands and resort destinations. It is also a base for bareboat and charter yacht activity. From the Lions lookout above the port operations, we had a great view out of the harbour to the islands beyond and sat there in a shady spot for quite some time soaking up the view. But we had to be back at the caravan park by 4pm for the daily bird feeding.
As advertised, at 4pm one of the caravan park staff arrived with a bucket of bird feed, which appeared to be soggy bread. There were already Ibis and Whistling Tree Ducks on the ground awaiting his arrival and then when he put some feed in the trays of the bird feeder, several Rainbow Lorikeets flew down from the nearby trees.
Lucinda put some feed in her hand and shortly after holding it out in front of her, one of the Lorikeets came down to eat from her hand. Another joined in, but when a third arrived a fight between them ensued. Unfortunately when a car drove past the Lorikeets were spooked and while a couple returned later, they were not in the numbers that were there earlier. Amongst the Whistling Tree Ducks there was another breed of duck and the park staff member said it was a Radjah Shelduck, more commonly known as a Burdekin Duck.
Sunday's pizza was topped with Tasmanian salmon, something we'd not tried before, but it was very tasty. No dessert tonight because we had some ice-cream with the custard tart for lunch!
