Camp Blackman certainly provides a tranquil place to camp; the silence overnight was a stark contrast to what we've experienced at some of the caravan parks during this trip. One of several campgrounds in the Warrumbungle National Park, it is located on the original Belougerie Homestead site which was owned by the Blackman family until it was added to the Park in the 1960s. The Park was added to the National Heritage List in 2006.
A pancake breakfast kicked off the day and we hoped that the forecast of continuing rain showers would not prevent us from completing a couple of the short walks. Our first walk was to Whitegum Lookout which provides spectacular views of the landscape. From here you can see many of the geological features, including Crater Bluff, Belougery Spire, Breadknife (a 90m high and 500m long volcanic dyke), Bluff Pyramid, Bluff Mountain (which has a near-vertical 250-metre high face), Mount Exmouth and Belougery Split Rock. These are a result of volcanic eruptions some 17 million years ago and subsequent erosion.
Starting from the Canyon Picnic Area, the Wambelong Nature Trail took us along the banks of the (dry) Wambelong Creek and offered spectacular views of ancient rock outcrops as we moved through the gorge. We also saw more kangaroos, which are quite common throughout the Park, some goats and a few birds. But we had to cut our walk short as rain began to fall and we weren't prepared for wet weather trekking.
Although there's a bit of water around by way of rain, no drinking water is supplied at the Park and while the van water gauge still showed 25% in the tanks, we went to the Visitor Centre to buy a 10 litre container of spring water which, with a bit of ingenuity, we poured into the van tanks. We probably won't need it, but it's better to be sure than sorry!
Dinner was lamb chops on the Weber accompanied by steamed vegetables, with peaches and ice-cream for dessert. Tomorrow we continue our journey towards home with our stopovers yet to be finalized, but the route will include painted silo sightseeing at Gulargambone, Tungamah, Devenish and Goorambat.
