We've done a few kilometres driving and walking to see some sights over recent days, and with tomorrow a travel day to Coolangatta, today would be a quiet day. Lucinda did a little bit of washing and then we spent the rest of the morning sitting outside in the shade. After a silverside sandwich, apple/mandarin and a cup of tea for lunch, we went and fueled up the Territory ready for departure tomorrow.
But rather than return straight back to the caravan park we drove down along The Esplanade where there were a couple of kite surfers doing their thing. Not sure why, but there doesn't seem to have been as many of them as we've seen here on previous trips.
But further off shore we saw a large cargo ship passing by. It was surprising how fast it was going and no sooner had we seen it, it was gone around the point.
So we followed the coast road around to Kings Beach where we thought we'd have a good view of it. However while we had a good view South over Kings Beach, the ship was still further round the point and out of view.
So round to Shelly Beach we went and from the car park we had a good view as it headed North. Until then we didn't know the name of the ship or the names of two other ships that appeared to be at anchor off shore.
Using the www.marinetraffic.com website we were able to work out the ship we followed was the Grand Orion, a cargo ship that had just left Brisbane and was bound for Auckland; a journey that would take 4 days.
From the same site we worked out that the two ships at anchor were waiting to go into Brisbane. One was the Singapore registered Epic St.Agnes is an LPG tanker while the other was the Netherlands registered cargo ship, Minervagracht.
The other activity we observed while parked at Shelly Beach was a wedding. Well we didn't see the actual ceremony as that was at the other end of the car park, but the stretched limo brought the bride, groom and bridesmaid down to the sand and rocks in front of us where the photographer directed them into a variety of poses. We reckon the best was when the groom held his new wife above his head as if he was a weightlifter!
On the way back to the van we stopped at the Seafood Market for a couple of frozen Curried Prawn and Scallop pies which we'll have when we get to Coolangatta. Tonight's dinner is chicken stir fry using the leftovers from our roast chicken.
