Kirra Beach Tourist Park, Queensland, Australia
We'd done a fair amount of walking over the last two days and so didn't plan any sightseeing today. After an early sandwich lunch in the van we drove to the Tweed City shopping centre to stock up on groceries to cover us for the rest of our stay here. But also Bryon bought a pair of shorts and Lucinda a couple of tops.
After the shopping was done we decided to drive up to Currumbin to see if any of the SWELL sculptures remained as it was just too busy to stop there on Saturday. The SWELL Sculpture Festival is held annually on Currumbin Beach in early September. Now in its 17th year, the 10 day festival brings up to 50 works by nationally and internationally renowned artists to a free public exhibition on this beautiful beach.
Unfortunately all of the temporary sculptures had been removed, but we stopped at Elephant Rock which is beside the Currumbin Beach Vikings SLSC. This large rock embedded right on the foreshore has a concrete stairway to the outlook at the top, providing great views in all directions.
From there we drove a little further beside Currumbin Creek and stopped to look at the Pelican sculptures at Winders Park. Created from scrap metal by Richard Moffatt these sculptures were an acquisition from the 2004 SWELL Sculpture Festival. The artist notes that “capturing the feel of an animal and assembling its form in a whimsical way is great fun.”
Returning home via Currumbin Beach again we did stop to see the Frank Miles sculpture "Sun Spirit". This artwork was an acquisition from the 2006 SWELL Sculpture Festival. The artist said that he "wanted to depict the pleasure of leisure time at the beach and the warmth of the Australian sun together with the gentle sea breezes reflecting out of the figure."
Dinner was simply the salmon left over from last night's pizza tossed through a Greek salad and it was delicious. Dessert was banana, ice-cream and custard. A donut with a cup of tea finished another simple, but good meal.
