Broken Hill to Wilpena

Hawker, South Australia, Australia
Firstly an apology for the delay in posting this part of the blog, but connectivity at Rawnsley Park Station is very limited and so we've concentrated on enjoying the holiday rather than fighting with the technology!

After three enjoyable days in Broken Hill it was time to hitch up the caravan and move on . Our destination today is Rawnsley Park Station just outside the Wilpena National Park, a drive of 463km and so we got away by 8:30am.

Just out of Broken Hill we were waved off the road by a pilot leading an oversized load. She advised us it was 8.5m wide and certainly there was no room for any passing traffic as it moved down the Barrier Highway. We presumed it was some piece of mining equipment. Before long we crossed the NSW/SA border, where I expected there to be a quarantine inspection station, but we came across that a further 200km down the road for some reason.

Again there were many goats grazing adjacent to the road, but there were also quite a few emus. Fortunately they didn't seem to worry too much about us as we drove by. However we did see a rather unusual sight beside the road and that was a rotary clothes line loaded with all sorts of items. We stopped at Mannahill for a toilet stop mid-morning and found it to be a popular stop for caravanners, with half a dozen others also stopping there . Mannahill is on the rail line and the old station was a very pretty building. At the quarantine station the inspector wanted to make sure we had no fruit and vegetables and all we had to do was to show him what we had in the caravan fridge.

Our lunch stop was Peterborough, where we had visited during our trip to SA in February. We took the opportunity to photograph the last two of the four train themed Peterborough signs which are placed on each of the four main roads into the town. Last time here the building which housed the Federation Quilt was not open, but today we were able to view it as it was opened. It features many buildings and scenes which are significant to the area and the display is enhanced by a recorded voice explanation.

On that last trip we'd travelled the road between Peterborough and Orroroo, but today we headed North from there towards Hawker and so were again covering new territory with the caravan in tow. Whereas Peterborough had the train themed signs, Orroroo had a kangaroo themed sign .

It was just before 4pm that we reached the turnoff on the Wilpena Road towards Rawnsley Park Station. But just before the caravan park we had a bit of excitement when a kangaroo hopped out in front of the car on its way to the other side of the road. When we arrived at the caravan park we found it was in a very natural setting with the mountains providing a picturesque backdrop. We are looking forward to exploring the area over the next few days.

Dinner was Jamie Oliver Wicked Chicken Skewers with a pasta salad, followed by peaches and icecream for desert. After dinner we had a walk around and looking up into the sky you could see so many more stars than you would at home. We also saw a moving light in the sky and thought this may have been the international space station as it disappeared from view, presumably as it went into the earth's shadow from the sun.
