Streaky Bay to Elliston

Elliston, South Australia, Australia
As we awoke to see the sun rise over the Streaky Bay township we could have easily just stayed here for at least another day and soaked up the relaxed atmosphere, but we'd booked ahead due to the popularity of this area and so it was time to pack up and move on. But we were both feeling the effect of a fair bit of walking and sun over the last couple of days and so it was fortunate our next stop at Elliston was just 126km down the Flinders Highway.

We passed Murphy's Haystacks again and it was easy to see why someone may have mistaken them for haystacks rather than ancient rock formations . Venus Bay was just a short detour off the highway and although we didn't know at the time, it would have been a big mistake to bypass it. A vantage point on the cliffs above the township provided spectacular views along the rugged coastline North and South, as well as the entrance to Venus Bay. Looking from North to South it looked like single unbroken waves rolling in one after the other, something again that has to be experienced as it can't be captured in a photo, although I did try using a panoramic shot!

Today has been our hottest day, with forecast temperatures in the 30s and by the time we reached Elliston the car temperature gauge was showing 34degC. We set up the caravan and for the first time this trip we put out the awning and panels to provide some shade. Being so hot and with a full day here tomorrow to sight see we decided to just relax. But we thought an iced coffee at the local 'bakery' would go down well and so decided to walk the short distance into the township . Just outside the caravan park entrance is a restored council chambers building which was restored as part of centenary celebrations in 1988. Unfortunately when we got to the 'bakery' it was closed, even though we'd been told it was open until 6:00pm, unlike all of the other businesses in town that were either not open on a Sunday of now closed. So we drove to the roadhouse nearby and bought a couple of coffee flavoured milks which we converted to 'iced coffees' with some ice-cream back at the caravan.

Sculptures and murals appear to be a theme around the area and on our walk we saw a whale tail rising from a grassed area of a park, just like it would from the sea. We presume this is in recognition that whales pass by Elliston as they migrate.

It's unusual for us to go anywhere without a map, but we did on our walk to the 'bakery'. On reviewing the map back at the caravan I realised it was not the 'bakery' we were after, but a 'cafe' that was a couple of hundred metres around a bend from the 'bakery'. Online reviews for the Little Bay Cafe were good and so we were a little disappointed that we'd not found it. Perhaps we'll check it out tomorrow, but I have an idea it may be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

We've seen quite a few birds during our travels and this afternoon as the temperature became more pleasant, while sitting outside the caravan there were some white doves with fantails. At one stage some were hanging on one of the water taps drinking from the drips.

The menu for dinner is lamb chops cooked on the Weber with the remainder of the German potato salad. Some rain is forecast for tomorrow, but I don't think our sight seeing will be seriously impacted and the cooler temperatures to go along with that will make things more pleasant.
