Agrigento ... A Day at the Beach

Agrigento, Sicily, Italy
Where is the time going!  It's our last day in Agrigento already.
But first, a drive to Realmonte.
Scala dei Turchi  ... 'Stairs of the Turks' is a white limestone cliff overlooking the Mediterrean.  Over the years the wind, waves and rain have carved a natural staircase ... a succession of wide steps, furrows and terraces sloping towards the Mediterrean Sea.  It is also part of local legends.  It is said that in the 16th century the Saracen pirates (The Turks...a derogatory term used to describe people devoted to piracy) docked ships in the calm waters protected by the Scala and climbed the natural steps to reach the top of the cliff and raid local villages.
We spent a little time climbing the steps, until it got too high for Gary and I started thinking about getting down.
We sat for a while on the wide steps before heading back to the car and on to our next destination . . . and lunch.
Our local Agrigento Beach,  San Leone Beach, is close to the Valley of the Temples and, therefore, not far from where we are staying.
A great stop for lunch and a few hours on the beach.  It's obviously past September 15th and the unofficial end of season . . . very quiet.
Off to Syracusa tomorrow . . . with a stop along the way.
