Hula Pie

Kaanapali, Hawaii, United States
The morning started with a hearty breakfast and then a long leisurely walk in the sun and wind south on the beach-side boardwalk south to the Whalers Village that took about 45 mins. It has a number of very upmarket shops, bars and restaurants and as they're within walking distance of the resorts, are priced (eye-wateringly) accordingly.
The Whalers Village is opposite the golf courses we are are booked to play at on Sunday and Tuesday. We stroll by some of the holes - there are lots of golfers out playing. We notice it is very windy here. I am surprised - the temperature is cooler (about 24C) than I expected and we are getting small rain showers that last about one minute but are quickly blown away. Even when there is no obvious cloud overhead it still rains on you.
There are 2 shuttle buses that service the Westin resorts in this area: one rotates around the Westin resorts every 20 mins and the other picks up from these resorts and first drops off at the Cannery Mall, which is a downmarket (after the resort area) shopping mall and supermarket (Safeways), then at the Outlets of Maui mall (fabulous shopping experience) and finally, at Lahaina which is a strip of touristy shops, bars and restaurants on the beach front about 5 miles south of the resort area - and where the Banyan Tree is (more about that later) - before returning to the resorts.
After lunch and with Jane and Don, we caught the shuttle to the Outlets mall, had a wander around and then walked down to Lahaina. Jane and I visited each shop while Chris and Don retired to a bar (Kimos) overlooking the beach for beer o'clock. Jane and I went as far as the Banyan tree which takes up a whole block. This tree is very unusual as a number of it's branches have spread and formed new root systems which then form new trees that are joined by these branches. it is an amazing formation, too large to capture in a single picture.
Just before sunset, we caught the shuttle back to the resort and decided to dine at Dukes restaurant in another resort just 200 metres north on the boardwalk (which is just next door). It was cool and still breezy but the highlight of the meal was dessert - Don ordered a Hula Pie. This is one quarter of a pie that looks much like an 8 inch tall pavlova - but is all macadamia nut ice-cream on a Oreo chocolate cookie base, then covered in an inch of  whipped cream before being smothered in chocolate sauce....  I am not sure if we were supposed to explode or erupt after eating but it was delicious! We certainly weren't up to any hula-ing. Zzzzzzz....
