Kerikeri, Northland, New Zealand
After a good nights sleep we are woken at 6.45 by a very loud noise. A helicopter is taking off outside our room. The owners explain it stays occasionally when they are crop spraying in the area.
Today we are playing golf at the Kerikeri Golf Club and tee off at 10am. When we arrive at the course there is no-one there, it is Mother's Day but we are surprised it's so quiet for a Sunday. The course is very interesting and well maintained, with 6 very hilly holes and the rest quite flat. We see what appears to be the same pair of ducks on every hole but soon realise that the Male and Female are quite distinctive and they are in pairs everywhere. The golf is fun and Chris is the winner of the day.
Lunch is at the Kerikeri Bakery, which has a fabulous range of cakes, pies, sandwiches and frittata. After lunch we drive to Paihia (pronounced Pa he ah) and check out the scenic drive that overlooks the Bay of Islands. We catch the ferry to Russell across the bay about a 20 min ride and the views are lovely. We have drink at the Duke of Marlborough Hotel which just happens to be the first hotel that had a liquor license in NZ, we sit outside overlooking the Morten Bay Fig trees and view of the bay, then head back on the following ferry.
It's a lovely afternoon with lots of sunshine, the bays are full of boats tied up and very few out in the harbour.
