It's a warm and sunny day, golf today is just 10 mins away at Maraenui Golf Club. Dad has decided not to play today so we play with a couple of members and he is chauffer to the golf clubs. The course is long, flat and heavy, absolutely no run. Chris has a good day and we both enjoy the course. There are some lovely trees on the course and it feels very similar to Hastings yesterday, but at a third of the price it is very enjoyable and the members are friendly.
After golf we head off to the Figgery for lunch. They have a lovely coffee shop and just about everything on the menu has figs. I chose the pizza which is fig and blue cheese with walnuts, delicious. We pick up some jam from the shop which sounds very figgy. There are information boards arounds the café for aspiring fig growers giving all the facts needed to grow, pick and prune fig trees. They also have a large orchard outside. The area is full of vineyards, apple and peach trees and berry farms. The other obvious feature are the trimmed hedges, these are everywhere and are typically 20ft tall beautifully trimmed. Photos to follow tomorrow.
While on the road we pass a large truck and something hits our windscreen, it cracks the glass and I am grateful for taking insurance on the rental.
We drive into Hastings and it has a very wide main street. Once again, all the shops and surrounding buildings are just one story high. It seems there is no one around as the shops are empty and we wonder how they can survive. Some of the buildings are 1930's art deco style and look wonderful with painted details enhancing their features. Another site of this lovely town is a railway line that crosses the main street and they have built a fountain on either side at the crossroad.
By the time we arrive home we are happy to relax for the rest of the afternoon.
