First leg was a happy daytime flight on the single class airline, La Compagnie, from awful Luton to even more awful Newark where we spent the night .

After the glories of the flight, the sight of grey skies and ugly airport environs the next morning, plus wall-to-wall Trump reporting from ever-present TV scenes brought on a severe case of culture shock.

But as soon as we hit the road and got into the green suburbs of New Jersey and then the forests and corn fields of Pennsylvania, the gloom lifted and happy days were here again.
