Day 9: Custer, S Dakota to Gillette, Wyoming

Gillette, Wyoming, United States
Well, a rough start this morning. I wanted a good shower and hair wash today, so thought I would try the campground showers. That meant gathering all supplies and hiking about a city block down to the building, and it was windy cold out - so I wrapped the towel under my jacket for extra warmth and hiked down, set up all my supplies and turned on the water - only cold water coming. Then I remembered the laundry said only cold water available so I concluded that they only had cold water. But I decided I could brave the water just to wash my hair, but the water ran colder as I washed - my scalp was actually hurting with cold!! Fastest hair wash in history, then did a partial dry just for the joy of the hair dryer running, and gathered my things to go back to RV for rest of shower. Only got a few feet when campground owner calls out to me and asked if I found the hot water (with that cute little Minnesota or N Dakota accent) - turns out the hot and cold water settings were switched and I just needed to turn it to cold water, which did make me return and enjoy a hot shower! Linda and Sara met me at the door, wondering what was taking so long (because Linda couldn't wait to get to the fun of dumping again)! So back to the RV - we were now hearing gurgling sounds from toilet after each flush and I was afraid of a volcano type action. So we tackled that job, getting quicker at it, but Linda did come away "sprinkled from arm to leg" but we think it was the clean water hose - if not stay tuned for our coming stories of GI born illness! We were a little late for check out time at the campground, left at 11:40, but that guy owed me after the cold shower experience! Next on to Crazy Horse Memorial - it was just down the road from our campground, but heavy rain started as we got there. Fortunately, most of the experience is inside the center (movie about the sculptor and tons of artifact and history to read). The actual monument has been under construction since1948 with only the head completed so far, but half of the interest here is the story of the sculptor who started the project. He was a Polish orphan, raised in Boston, who briefly worked on Mt Rushmore, but was contacted by Chief Standing Bear to do this monument for the Indians. So he left New England to come to S Dakota at age 40, along with his young wife, to work with the Indians and starting this carving single handed in 1948. He and wife had 10 kids and that apparently sped up the process as he taught them how to help dynamite, carve, use equipment, etc. He died in 1982 but his whole family has continued the carving and running of the memorial, refusing to use any federal funds since that was part of the issues of distrust between Indians and the government. By far, worth the $11 entrance fee! Next on agenda was Mount Rushmore which involved a drive through the Black Hills, up a steep mountain grade. There were a couple roads that were supposed to have even better views, but not passable in the RV. Regardless, the views we saw were stunning. We took a quick look at Rushmore, but enjoyed the mountains just as much. Found a picnic area that was deserted due to ugly weather but gave me the opportunity to run Sara - that lead to the discovery of a short trail to a lookout point, looking down on the granite mountains. It's so much fun to find these hidden treasures that aren't even mentioned in the guidebooks! And, then heading west again - we were supposed to make it to Montana today, but that didn't happen so we drove til 7:30 and stopped in Gillette, Wyoming at the favorite stop, Walmart. Gillette is known for development of coal, oil, and methane gas - lots of smokestacks and huge plants! As soon as we came into Wyoming, the territory flattened out and we could see miles into the distance, then the winds moved in and made the last hour of the drive very hard. Found a prime space in Walmart lot, got Sara walked before dark, walked over to the grocery store, and then made our chicken salad with black rice and fruits for dinner. And we still can't seem to get to bed before midnight, even using the Mountain Time Zone!! But the bed in the RV, plus the memory foam mattress toppers feel very good at night.

Hello Colleen, it's Denise, your dad's neighbor that went out on the boat with you and Sara. How nice of you to blog this beautiful adventure. Love the pics. So far one of my favorites is that one of Sara at Black Hills National Forest. She's such a sweetie. Can't wait to see more. Be safe and live large.
