Day 11: Billings, Montana to Harlowton, Montana

Harlowton, Montana, United States
Good morning!! Up at 7am to be first at the service desk of Pierce RV, and I was! Apparently, things move slowly in Billings, as he told me they would start work "as soon as the technicians arrived to work - 8 or 9 ish" - just have a seat in the lounge and we'll call you in 2 or 3ish hours when it's ready. Sara was a big hit in the dealership, and I do believe they were all genuinely friendly people because we must have spoken to at least 20 employees, from housekeeper to owner of dealership and all were sharing their stories of dogs, travel, time in Georgia, trips to Alaska so we were soaking it up. I had time to check in at home where Bud has been hospitalized and family is trying to keep a transportation system going for Mom to get to the hospital. Praying he is better and home safely soon! I spent some time shopping in the RV store, bought a book on boondocking and cheap camp sites around the country so we can save our pennies for the days when we have time to appreciate the amenities of a great campground ( great sites with laundry, nice showers, pool, and full hookups run $40 to $50 per night, basic sites are about $30-35 per night), compared to Walmart parking lots for free :). So I bought the book and mapped out a site for tonight - it talked about city parks that offer sites with maybe just electric for $10-15 per night and have the advantage of allowing you to walk into town for food or browsing - sounds like a good idea! We got our call of completion at 1:00 - had the generator oil changed, fixed our radio/command center by sticking a pin into a reset hole, filled with propane (only $2.38!!), showed me how to open the engine and fill windshield washer fluid, checked tire pressure, and gave us a tank of drinking water all for $122 total - I think a good deal! We took pics with the service reps and knew everyone's story by the time we got out!! Then on to Costco, hoping for a great gas price - $2.05 per gallon was pretty good! Shopped Costco for dog food (trying a new flavor for Sara since she's been acting a little finicky since having to give up her Intown Healthy Hound food from Atlanta!), and some veggies, fruit, and a rotisserie chicken and some individually frozen packets of Mahi - being mindful of the limited space in refrig and freezer but thinking ahead to dry camping tonight and in Glacier National Forest over next couple nights. So back on the road at 3pm, aiming to make it to a city park in Harlowton, as reported in my new book! The route started on I90 West again, but an hour later we left the main highways for a 2 lane road through farm country - more cows and also starting to see some sheep with baby lambs - still haven't found the opportunity to be able to stop at the right place in road to photograph the baby cows or lambs! As my family knows, I tried that a lot in Ireland, and any time you approach the babies, they run away, and turns out the calves do as well! But fun to watch as they all run like puppies across the fields. We started to see distant snow capped mountain ranges that were just unreal to view - miles of green plains and then these mountains (named the Crazy Mountain range) erupt out of that flat land!! We reached Harlowton about 6pm finding only 1 other RV with no signs of life. There is an empty playground, rodeo ring, and school track and an occasional suspicious car driving through...but we are on a small river and it's a great place for Sara to run and Rosemary and Don did give us mace and a hunting knife!!!! So we decide to stay. The sign says "Attendant will collect fee" so we go walking while watching for whoever may be the "Attendant" - he arrives at 7pm, appears harmless (elderly, deaf, and limping but it may just be a ploy to lull us into a false sense of security :) and then he says, "Welcome to Harlowton" - I know that was a line in some horror movie!! If our blog doesn't continue tomorrow, please come to Harlowton, MT!! The town isn't very cute, but we've seen tons of deer and hear the cows mooing nearby, and the price was right. First place we haven't had TV reception so we listened to one of Hilda's suggested podcasts tonight during dinner. Dinner was quite tasty thanks to our shopping spree, but I think it's early to bed tonight after the sunset walk with Sara. Weather is clearing so sunset was nice over the farmlands. But last night's weather was predicting 1-3 inches of snow in Glacier, so let's hope that's only upper elevations!!
