Day 12: Harlowton, Montana to Great Falls, Montan

Great Falls, Montana, United States
Well, we survived the night in Harlowton, in fact woke to a sunny, warm morning. Had a nice walk around the park and along the Musselshell River and then packed up and drove through town - did not realize we had not come to "downtown" yet, so must revise yesterday's opinion of town, and it did have a lot of "character". Pictures taken and then on the road again- today we are taking country roads, no freeways, so we are really in the farm country. Stunning scenery - snow capped mountains (and even some on the roadsides), energy windmills, more cows, historical roads stops. We didn't have a really long drive today, but wanted to get into Great Falls and prepare the RV for some dry camping (no hookups will be available) when we get to Glacier Nat Park. We also discovered that the charging cord to the GPS had broken, so we were temporarily directionless! Thanks for the compass, Rosemary! I did find a place to stop for my cow pictures - initially they all started backing away as I approached, but then they all came at me, staring me down - they have such sad eyes, wish I had something for them. Linda is taking pics of me taking pics of cows, and Sara just takes whatever seat is empty in the RV! So our first action in Great Falls is to find Target and get a GPS cord replacement - great luck, the sales clerk new exactly what we needed and it worked! Then down to a gas station while Linda tackled grocery store where we got some smaller items that could not be found at Costco yesterday. The clerks in Target were so friendly that I asked about a good steak dinner and they all agreed on Jaker's - maybe after we get a campsite. So on to Dic's RV Campground on the Sun River, near the merge into the Missouri River (a very large river). There is a riverside park, so Sara and I went for a quick walk. The weather has turned ugly since we stepped our of the RV in Great Falls - windy, damp, cold, prob low 40's. Linda was heading for campground showers and I got our laundry going, then lined up for the shower. We have also met another RV couple who are headed to Glacier tomorrow, but she is very worried about the snows on the east side of Glacier - just where we are headed! They came through snow on their way to Great Falls, so I guess we lucked out there, but will have to study some forecasts and road reports before proceeding tomorrow. If we can make it to the park, Sat is supposed to be clear and sunny. More reeval needed in am. Plus need to dump tanks, refill and do a little housecleaning in the RV. Campground hosts also mention Jaker's for a great steak dinner, so we reward ourselves with a drive via RV to Jaker's (an attempt at parallel parking did not go well, but I moved on and found a better space - still need some practice on backing this bus!). Dinner was just what we dreamed of - had ribeye cap steak grilled perfectly, mushrooms and salad. We ate too much, and I'm feeling a little guilty as I look at the cute cow pics I took today - no more steak for awhile, I promise!
