Day 13: Great Falls, Montana to Glacier National

Babb, Montana, United States
Good morning on Friday the 13th! We were up late (after that late steak dinner) doing laundry and the blog. We were up at the crack of 9:30 am and resumed our housekeeping tasks - time to vacuum, clean bathroom, change sheets (which is a miserable job when beds are surrounded on 3 sides - probably would have waited longer, but thinking we won't want to buy Canadian money to do laundry in Canada for next 10-12 days), empty/dump tanks and fill fresh water tank, scrape bugs off windshield, get breakfast and finally take Sara for a long walk - we followed the Sun River next to our campground until it merged with the Missouri River, with parks along the edge. A nice walk with temps high 40's, but no rain or wind, so overall pleasant. We were kind of delaying travel since we found info on Internet last night that said East Glacier area was expecting snow overnight, then warming during day, so we planned to get there after roads had dried up a bit. First, though, Linda wanted to stop to buy gloves - Target had told her they were "seasonal" item, none available! I think it's the perfect season for gloves here, but the locals were out in shorts and sleeveless tops! So we found Scheels, an outdoor sports store, and found a few remaining pair of gloves, even on sale! Linda said now the weather will warm up for sure since we bought gloves and her a hat, but I said it would be totally worth the price if it made the weather warm up! Then back on the road, direct North now, across the plains of cow pastures and crops (lots of grains and some low green grass crop?). Along the way, we tried calling the St Mary's National Park Campground to get confirmation that roads were open and we could get a space - I had talked to West Glacier office 2 days ago, and they assured me St Mary's was open and it was first come, first serve for RV spaces. But we were getting no answer today, despite being on hold for 15 minutes saying someone would be with you shortly. So Linda called the National Parks reservation line where a helpful person (NOT) in Florida told us St Mary's was open, gave us a phone #, was ready to take our reservation, when she started to read more on her computer and eventually came to the conclusion that maybe they weren't open! Nothing on any of the sites or telephone sites could tell us that! So then Linda called our backup, KOA in St Mary's where she was told they would be opening 3 days from now - I told her to beg for us to be allowed to park at the gate tonight since it was now 4:20 and we would be arriving in 1 hour - it was beginning to sound like we were arriving into a ghost town! Well, that must have rung the bell, because they were so nice and said we could stay starting tonight if we could get by on electric utilities only, and price will only be $20 per night!! That sounded great since we would have had no hookups in the state park and that was same price! So we continued the drive, actually seeing the sun start to peek through, and being shocked with the scenery at every curve or peak in the road - we made many stops to get a better picture or to just contemplate the scenery! This must be where the saying "God's Country" came from! Arrived at our campsite, practically crying with excitement at the views around us, it's unbelievable - we're sitting in the center of camp with our front windows facing down to the St Mary River and Indian territory rising above us; looking out the back of the RV, we have views of the Glacier Mountains that flow into Canada about 30 miles from here. There's only 2 other campers here (and a horse grazing in the pasture), but huge mounds of animal waste in the fields (bears, deer? - it looks like cows, but none seen around here - may have to sleep with the blinds open to know what left those piles!! But Sara ran like a maniac, sniffing down every hole, running and hopping with the excitement of being free! We checked in and got the low-down from campground host on where the most/more beautiful views are??? Can it get better than this?! Supposedly Many Glaciers and Swift Current Glacier are recommended. Tomorrow we'll go hiking, but dogs not allowed on State Park trails and we've been warned to make lots of noise on the trails since bears will be startled by us early hikers - so time to bring out all the protection gear: whistles, mace, bear bells, and our own voices/noisemakers (i.e. Screaming). If we blog tomorrow night, then it works...if you don't hear from us again, it doesn't!
