Babb, Montana, United States
Second week on the road, second day at Glacier National Park; woke up at 9:30 to sunny skies and warmer weather, 50 degrees! Starting with Sara's walk to the lake, unfortunately no ducks to chase today. So made arrangements at the office to spend another night tonight because it is so gorgeous here, and then set out on our drive into the St Mary entrance of East Glacier. We passed the St Mary Campground that we had originally planned to use until we heard it was closed - we see the gates open and a few RV's in the lot so I suspect they are just camping on the sites without any hookups or management from the park service. We got a much better deal where we are, but were shocked to find that the normal rate at our campground was $73 per night, and we are getting it for $20 since they weren't officially open!! But on down the St Mary road into East Glacier, the views get better and better. St Mary Lake is huge and runs between the two mountain ranges, with the glaciers on the mountain sides up above. Apparently, the glaciers are receding and are expected to be melted by year 2030. We drove the road and picked 2 areas to get out and hike, much to Sara's dismay as she must stay behind. We followed a short trail under the view of Jackson Glacier where we saw 2 large deer just grazing on the trail. Then we drove back to Sunrift Gorge where we got out and met a lady from Germany who recommended the Sun Point Trail. We talked quite awhile as she told us she had started in Illinois, renting a car and driving from IL to WA state and up the Alaska Highway on her own, in early April!! And now she was coming back south and headed to IL to pick up her husband who would be flying in, and they were then going on to Quebec before returning to Germany - we meet many brave, independent travelers on the road! She had no complaints with the trip except to say so many restaurants and hotels were not yet open, that we were lucky to have our own accommodations - "you betcha" as they say here!! So we took her recs and headed out the trail to Sun Point from the Sunrift Gorge Trailhead. It was a beautiful hike along the lake, despite the signs warning of grizzly bear territory - we did encounter 2 more deer who seemed very tame and were actually approaching us! Sun Point Trail ended at this stunning view high above the lake, where the wind was blowing in terrific gusts - we had to cling to the rocks. The weather was changing, clouds blowing in and losing our sun, so temps had dropped from 60 to 50 degrees. Pictures taken, only 3 other people seen on this trail - 2 of them recommended taking the other fork in the path as well - taking you to St, Mary Falls. This was a gorgeous waterfall, but Linda was in search of one more waterfall on the trail - so we hiked on until I needed to stop, and she continued on another 30 mins. Now it was really getting cold, so when she got back, we hightailed it back up the mountain to the RV, where Sara was very glad to see us. The scenes were gorgeous, but we are starved and cold. Got back to campground to find our space had been taken, so we chose a new site tonight - many more campers tonight since the campground officially opened today (Linda was able to negotiate one more cheap night). We are planning to cross into Canada tomorrow, so I may decrease internet activity to every couple days to save on Canadian rates. We just filled the fresh water tank with as much Montana water as we could get, but no dumping or draining required yet. Another gorgeous day!!
