Day 17: Calgary, Alberta to Whitecourt, Alberta

Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada
No sleeping in today - the lawn mowers were outside our RV to spruce up the Canadian Superstore - guess we can't complain about the noise when we are parking for free! But they did keep our "yard" looking nice! We spent awhile on the phone with Verizon, trying to understand international coverage and get through to road conditions. I think we got the Verizon issue somewhat worked out, but fear we will not have much wifi until we get to Alaska. And we gave up trying to get info on road conditions - guess we'll find out when we get there! We didn't take any time to see Calgary, maybe when we come back through Banff, but headed out for Edmonton. Half way there (it's only about 200 miles), we decided to find a site for lunch and a place for Sara to walk - Linda researched all dog parks in our path and we decided on a park in LeDuc, town just south of Edmonton - turned out to be a massive dog park - you couldn't see from one end to the other because it was so long - mostly a big prairie, but with a stand of trees at the back end - I thought it would be just a few trees, but was actually an aspen forest with some handmade tepees built into the landscape! Took us about 45 minutes to walk the perimeter (all fenced) and then a little longer to make lunch at the RV - Sara was then ready for her nap and we got back into early rush hour traffic in Edmonton to find the next Costco. This time we got gas for about $2.40/gallon (Costco price was 82.9/liter as compared to highway rates of up to 92.9/liter). Another nice Costco employee gave me tips for visiting Banff and Jasper, saying Highway 93 between the two is spectacular, not to be missed (taking notes!). I would have liked to see Edmonton's park system since they have the largest city park system in North America, which is mostly along the North Saskachewan River, but it was rush hour and I'm still not comfortable driving the bus in city traffic, so back on the road, heading northwest to Dawson Creek. We stopped in Whitecourt tonight at a Good Sam campground and can get internet only if we sit up at the office, where we are meeting our first nasty mosquitos! So won't be writing much tonight! We did have a quick dinner of Mahi filets, green beans, and apple/spinach salad - hoping Linda gets those brownies going tonight! We did travel 319 miles today, my all time record so far! But more of that if we want to get to Alaska - they estimate 10 days for driving Calgary to Alaska state line! - we'll see! BTW, now getting dark at 10pm and getting light before 6am.
