Day 18: Whitecourt, Alberta to Fort St John, BC

Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, Canada
Woke up to light rain this morn, which just made one want to stay under the covers - but needed to get Sara out - she had a small accident yesterday and wet in the RV and that is so unlike her, I'm wondering if she's sick. Hoped we could get to Alaska before looking for a vet. But today is all about making some time, anxious to get on the Alaska Highway! But first we dump the tanks this am and clean the windshield (yesterday I thought I was seeing a helicopter in the sky but it was actually a huge bug splatter on the windshield - passenger side wiper is not making contact with upper windshield, so leaves a smear in one area - must check with dealer about where to get warranty work done while in Alaska (notice there are no Camping Worlds in Montana, Canada, or Alaska!) - also one of the drawers got stuck in open position and we had to pull it apart and adjust brackets before getting it to go back in - I hear RV's are notorious for needing many repairs in the first year. I have a list of minor issues, fortunately nothing critical so far! So again, on the road at 10:30 (early!). We noticed the flat plains suddenly turned into forested rolling hills, but you can still see the road stretching out like a ribbon for a hundred miles in front of you. Around lunch, we took a side road to Saskatoon Island Provincial Park, north of Grand Prairie. It was a beautiful state park, with no fee for day visits, with picnic areas, boating, playgrounds and hiking. The skies had cleared, so we ate lunch from the RV, then hiked around 2 lake areas for 2 hours. The name is derived from the Saskatoon berries found in this area. Unfortunately, I noticed poor Sara is now having bloody urine and I worry this problem can't wait til we get into Alaska. So as I start driving toward Dawson Creek, Linda is checking out closest vet - if we could get to Fort St John before 9pm, a vet could see us. We crossed through Dawson Creek where the Alaska Highway originates - Milepost 0!! The other bonus was we crossed into British Columbia and the Pacific Time Zone - another hour earlier! Just when I thought we had reached Fort St John, we came out of the plains and into a long downhill grade, through a canyon, and across a high, narrow suspension bridge over the Peace River - Linda says it was pretty, but I was just focused on getting across the bridge in this big RV without hitting the sides of the bridge! We made it to vet by 6:30 pm and were greeted by many friendly staff. They told us if we hadn't made it here by 9pm today (they are only open til 9 on Wed nights!!) we would have had to drive to Whitehorse (another 3-4 days drive to find the next veterinarian!). The vet saw Sara quickly, got urine samples and an ultrasound, also noticed a heart murmur (hmmm), and let us go back out to the RV in the parking lot while they analyzed results. The vet came out to our RV, we invited her in, and gave us the results of urinary tract infection, no particular cause known - antibiotics ordered and we can be on our way. As a side, the staff also offered to find us a campground and gave us hundreds of ideas for where we needed to spend more time over the next few days. They also clued us into the fact that we were coming upon Victoria Day, the first 3 day weekend for Canadians this spring, and campgrounds would be full! Since it was now 9pm, we opted for Walmart tonight (with manager approval). For the record, sunset is now 9:12 pm and sunrise will be at 4:43am Pacific Time!
