Day 19: Fort St John - Tetsa River Lodge, BC

Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, Canada
Didn't check to see if sunrise was really at 4:43 am, but we heard rain and felt the RV swaying in the wind so it was really hard to get up. But when we heard the Walmart trucks pulling up next to us ( I'm learning I need to choose my Walmart parking spot more carefully-being near grass for Sara is NOT the only consideration!) but it got us moving quickly. We stopped at Safeway on our way out of town, fearing we are headed to the hills, need to have stock of fresh veggies and a few essentials, like chocolate chip cookies! We still haven't made the brownies because we need electric power to run the oven that long :(. It's miserable out, but I'm finally getting the bugs off the windshield thanks to all this rain. We stopped at Pink Mountain for a small amount of gas, thinking we might not make it to the big city, Fort Nelson - that's where we first started having snow flurries, so you'll see my lovely picture that Linda snapped from inside the RV while I was out in the flurries pumping gas and washing windows - we also paid $3.80/gal for gas at this little outpost, but the clerk (wearing a sleeveless tank top) told me to help myself to coffee, no charge - I wanted whatever was keeping her hot because I thought it was freezing cold! The snow was not sticking and only came in spurts so we kept going. Had to settle for a roadside rest stop for lunch, but the sun came out briefly while we were eating, and then the rain came back when it was time to walk Sara! But had a good lunch of grilled bacon, arugula, and tomato sandwich. On the road again, trying to get to Fort Nelson or beyond - Linda has been working on getting reservations somewhere since we were warned of holiday crowds, but it is hard to know how far we will travel over the next two days based on weather, mountain roads (now entering the Canadian Rockies), unexpected sites. We have also passed 2 areas where signs posted: "Danger - Wildfire Area - proceed at your own risk". We didn't see anyone turning around so we proceeded. The burning smells were strong, even inside the RV, and you could see recently burned forest on either side of the Alaska Highway. We hadn't realized fires had reached these areas last week - I thought we were only to worry about smoke. And, speaking of warning signs, there have been many signs telling you when to check brakes in prep for 7-12% downhill grades and when to put chains on your tires, then remove them - I scoffed and told Ken I would not be driving if I saw snow - never say never! Again, luck was with us. We got to Fort Nelson at 5pm and found the Visior Center open - a good place to check for RV sites for tonight. They told us of some places 1-2 hours north, so we decided to see how far we could get - unfortunately, we totally forgot to get gas, and got 15 min out of town before we realized. The maps showed no towns for 2-4 hrs, so we drove back to Fort Nelson and left again (this time paid #3.49/gal and now getting about 9mpg!) - now 6:30 but sunny and clear - can't believe it's the same day we had snow flurries! We are also seeing some black bear along the road - have counted about 6 different bears, but no other wildlife. We keep seeing Moose Crossing signs, but no moose. As we approach Tetsa River Lodge, we are lured in by signs of fresh cinnamon buns, homemade bread, wifi, full hookups, showers, laundry, and more cinnamon buns! So we decide to pull in for a "comfort night" since we know tomorrow is without hookups. The sign at gate says "Open", but as we pull up to office, it says "pick your site and pay in the morning". The sites do not have 30 amps electric, so I have to use my converter for 110 V electric, and think this means I shouldn't use any high wattage appliances (no brownies in the oven again!). And there's no one to give us a wifi password and no wifi detected, and the showers/laundry are in a metal building that looks cold! We don't even know the price here, but there had better be some good cinnamon buns in the morning!!! We eat dinner at 9pm (still light) and will hit the hay - Sara is already settled in bed. We did a record 340 miles today!
