Day 28: Valdez to Anchorage, AK

Anchorage, Alaska, United States
Woke up in the Valdez gravel lot to lots of activity - kids playing, RV's coming and going, sprinklers running to wet down the dust from the gravel, and tenters starting their breakfast in the tent field. We unhooked and dumped for good measure, then got on the road planning to head to Anchorage to hit Costco and Walmart before going into the Kenai Peninsula. The trip out of Valdez was just as gorgeous as driving in, even though it's the same road. It's a narrow gorge with the river and the road running together. We passed Worthington Glacier but did not do the ridge hike - just admired it from below! When we got back to Glenallen (about 1.5 hours), we were able to take the other road (Glenn Highway) toward Anchorage, which gave us new scenery. Three hours, only 3 towns, and 2 had no traffic signals in them - basically scenic wilderness! However, we did notice that all the rest stops were filling with RV's and towing in their ATV's - hundreds of them. Not sure if that was some official rally, or if that's where the ATVers congregate on Memorial Day weekend. But we came through Matanusca Glacier and river Gorge - a narrow canyon with a huge, raging river running through, then it narrowed down into Long Lake which was calm and beautiful. Lots of fishermen, but not too many in boats. After that, the road became quite narrow and windy, so driving was a little tight and slow. We got into Costco at 6:40 and they were closing at 7pm - so I got gas for $2.40/gal but did not have time to go into store. The Walmart was just down the street so we headed there, but discovered they do not allow overnight parking, so we planned to head to a different Walmart since we needed a quick overnight location - as I headed through town to the other Walmart, Linda found a city campground right across the street from where we had been, and they had vacancies, so we turned around again!! But we still hadn't done our Walmart shopping (needed food and RV essentials, and the splitter for all our technology in the front seat has broken). We were sidetracked by a Target and Best Buy along the way, but neither had the splitter, so into Walmart we went at 8:30pm - it was a long trip, we lost the grocery list, the self service was a disaster, and they double charged us for cilantro... So checking into City Campground at 10:45pm, but it's still light out!! Quick dinner of butternut squash and chicken, then plotting the church and Costco plans for tomorrow and maybe figure out where we're headed. But for now, at 12:30am, it's time for a cookie and bed! Yes, Donnie, we do need to slow down and stay somewhere for awhile - just need to figure out where that will be!
