Day 27 - Valdez All Day!

Valdez, Alaska, United States
Yeah, no travelling today! Woke up to a beautiful, sunny day here in Valdez and took our time getting out. We want to do a hike, but it occurs to us that the lists of hikes in the area may include snow covered trails since the mountains all around us are definitely covered by snow. So we proceed to the office to ask advice from the staff and to start some laundry in their machines. We also found a fenced dog park down the street and gave Sara a walk there - only one other dog so not too much exercise for Sara, but it's so warm that she was acting hot and tired when we came back. Our other consideration for hike location was that if we drove to a trailhead, we would have to unhook the RV from electric, water, cable, and sewer. So we opted for a hike that started on the other side of town, about a 1 mile walk from our RV. We crossed Mineral Creek and went to the dead end at the end of town. Apparently, this was the end where the oil tankers come in and the Alyeska Pipeline terminates. We walked a couple miles through woods and marshlands with glacial creeks that drain into Port of Valdez, then the trail turns into a path climbing the walls of the mountains on the bay. It was a gradual climb with great wildflowers, but the overgrowth got thicker and the path narrowed, and the gnats got thicker. Linda got stung by something, maybe something on a plant, so we finally had to turn back without getting around the mountain to see Shoup Bay or Glacier. We did meet two other hiker guys who were planning to get to the Bay, but we were ready to head out of the jungle! We were gone from the RV about 4 hrs and were just entering our campground when Linda noticed a lot of birds circling overhead, saying they looked like eagles. Our campground is Eagles Rest, but these were across the street so we went over to investigate. Turns out an entrepreneur fisherman was throwing hunks of raw fish into the parking lot, and he had at least 20 eagles circling overhead and diving for the fish - they flew in like bombers and snatched up those hunks of fish in a flash, sometimes having a disagreement with another diving eagle! But quite impressive to see that many of them at one time! And then back to the RV where we had left Sara in air conditioned comfort - she wasn't so happy about it, but she had a peanut butter bone to keep her company. Enjoying some TV (weather looks promising for next 2 days), and looking forward to a good night's rest altho it is 10:15pm and the sun is just setting - we keep hoping to see a good sunset over these mountains, but it's been cloudy every evening, so it will probably be a good one tonight, and we will have fallen asleep! Heading out to Anchorage tomorrow to stock up on supplies, then south to Kenai Peninsula. The campground is getting crowded due to a busy Memorial Day weekend - lots of fires and RV's all around us - I feel like I'm at the old drive-in movie lot the way we are all parked, but we have had nice amenities - loved my long, hot shower tonight!
