Homer, Alaska, United States
Staying in Homer for a few days, on advice of all who told us to "slow down". Not that we move quickly, we just move often! So slept in again til 10 am, and only got up then because we had not actually checked into this campground last night - talked by phone to the manager, and he told us to pick a spot and the office would be open at 9am to check in - I neglected to tell him we don't do 9am very well! So I took our laundry up and checked in at 10:30, had a little breakfast, put clothes in to dry ($3/load to wash and again to dry!), and then set out on a little beach hike for Sara's morning exercise. First we had to get down to the beach since our campground is on a bluff above the beach. We had seen a very rocky gulch that seemed to go down and I confirmed with the office lady that that was the way to the beach - she said someone went down about 2 weeks ago and said it was a little rough, but "doable". So Linda said she would crawl down first and then call for Sara so I wouldn't have to be pulled down with Sara on the leash. So I saw Linda disappear down and around the corner of the gulley, heard some scuffling, and comments coming about how the dirt walls were crumbling, but finally heard the all clear to send Sara. So Sara scrambled down to her and then it was my turn to rappel down the mountain - except, I stopped to look around before I took the sharp downhill plunge, and noticed a trail nicely making a gradual slope down to the beach. So naturally, I took the easy road and didn't even spill my coffee! So then it was a beautiful walk on the deserted, wide beach looking out over the huge expanse of Kachemak Bay and showing the snow covered Kenai mountains in the distance. Sara did love running free, but of course, thought it was a buffet of seafood, so no telling what she ate! We did see a dead otter and beaver, but fortunately Sara left them alone. The coast is very high and appears to be crumbling, with many trees having fallen over by their roots - but they turn into beautiful pieces of driftwood on the beach and have purple wildflowers growing amongst them. It was windy and a chilly 48 degrees so swimsuits were not an option! We got back to RV and picked up laundry, ate a quick sandwich, then unpacked the bikes and set off at 3:30pm in search of "downtown" Homer. We found old town with only about 6 storefronts, mostly restaurants. Riding on, we came to the Island and Ocean Visitor Center - it was a nature museum, but had beautiful displays and movies, and was free! It closed at 5 so we did the quick tour, then set out to ride the "Spit" - Homer Spit that would be! It is the piece of land that juts out 4.3 miles into the sea, also home to theaters, breweries, campgrounds, B&B's, marinas, fish processing, and adventure tours to the other side of the bay. We checked out a wildlife viewing platform that showed a great expanse where we could have seen moose (not us), the float plane takeoff area (no runway required!), a few pretty shops and art galleries, then tried to eat at a restaurant - one had a 20-30 minute wait, so we moved on and the next told us they were busy til Saturday night (2 days away) if we wanted to make reservations! She did give us recommendations for a couple other places back in town, but we decided to make it to the end of the Spit, or Land's End as they call it. But we did find our Water Taxi company open, so stopped to make arrangements to go by Water Taxi to Grewingk Glacier tomorrow - they take you over, point you on a trail toward the glacier, and want to know what time you want to be picked up - we signed up for the 10:30 trip because 2 other people are going then, but we have visions of being on "Naked and Afraid" with crazy strangers, and seeing who survives til the return taxi comes for us!! We'll let you know! And we pay $85 to do this, and we can take the dog (for no charge!). We touched "Lands End" of the Spit and headed back - of course, much colder now with wind blowing in our faces! And several uphill areas! We made it back to the RV at 9pm and heard a sad song from Sara who had been left alone. Reloaded the bikes, filled the fresh water tank, and fixed dinner - and a special thrill, we got TV channels tonight! Watching the "Late Show" as we finish dinner!!
