Day 35: Homer to Soldotna, Alaska

Soldotna, Alaska, United States
OK, we're boring today. Drained tanks, tried Tar and Bug Remover on front end of RV (any entomologists reading this blog who would want a scraping from my front end?), vacuumed, cleaned house, washed Sara, then ourselves all before noon - pretty good for us!! Then we pulled up stakes from Oceanview Campground, which we hated to leave, but it's a dreary day so it made it easier to go. We checked in on the Homer Farmer's Market before we left town - the water taxi driver had told us how home gardening has been encouraged by offering tent like greenhouses at subsidized costs to get people growing more local produce, which resulted in markets being able to open earlier in the season, and more variety of produce than they used to produce locally. But it's still very early in their growing season so we saw a lot of rhubarb, onions, lettuce, and one person selling arugula. And lots of homemade jams, baked goods, Birch syrup which sounded interesting but they weren't offering free samples so we passed for now, and only 1 stand with some fish (king crab legs, shrimp) - really thought I'd see more. So we came away with only some raspberry and strawberry rhubarb pie - baked by some older gentleman who said he moved to Alaska 25 years ago from Northern Indiana to "get away from it all" and he loves to bake the old fashioned way - he was selling all kinds of berry Pies and Amish bread - have to finish my blog before I can report on dessert! We did check out the Alaska Aviation office that was across from the market, on the slight chance we might find someone who could look up Barbie, our former nurse who became an Alaskan bush pilot! But office was closed today so we'll follow up on that later. So moving on, we took the high road out of town - a road that runs the ridge of the mountain above town and has many great houses with stunning views and had a couple great lookout points where we could get the birdseye view. It was a bit like driving the Pittsburgh hills, but at least these roads were wide enough for the RV! And then we headed on back to Soldatna and Kenai, not sure where we would stay, but trying to get Linda to church in one of those towns. We found the combination of Catholic mass and the laundromat in Soldatna - dropping clothes at laundromat, ran Linda to church, back to put clothes in dryer (we did the full loads of blankets and sheets today so wanted the big capacity machines), back to pick up Linda, back to get clothes. It has rained all afternoon, which worked out fine since we had no great plans for today, so we headed over to the Fred Myer store in town to refresh our gas and groceries and ask permission to boondock in their lot - they are very accommodating here, just asked that we check in if we plan to stay longer than 3 days, they have a dump station and water, propane gas, and free parking - they have now moved into #1 favorite store position since Walmart has turned us down a couple times now! So we've set up camp in the parking lot with 3 other RV's and an 18 wheeler! So I just sent Linda out to get a picture of our view at Fred Myer's and when she came back in, she once again hit her head on the fold down table in front of the door (and proceeded to utter **!**!) - it's happened at least 3 times, the bruising and bumps keep getting larger, but she still knows where she is, no I mean WHO she is, because neither of us are sure where we are any more! But, she got the picture, so hope you all enjoy the view!!
