Day 36: Soldotna to Quartz Creek (Cooper's Landing

Cooper Landing, Alaska, United States
It's hard to believe, but we actually "slept in" in the Fred Meyer's parking lot - I did hear some big truck sounds, but ignored them until we finally got up at 10:00 - only to find a line of RV's outside our RV space, all waiting for Fred Meyer's dump station! I'm not sure why there was a line on Sunday morning, but we found ourselves in the midst of RV activity. Since we were blocked into our space, I took Sara out and walked to Petco - first pet store I've seen in Alaska! Sara picked out a bison chew stick, so I let her get that for one of the RV confinement days! We got back to RV and made breakfast, then studied the maps to try to make a plan - turns out we have 15 days til we have to be in Anchorage and Denali; I did call to make a reservation for Sara at Tonglen Canine Resort while we do our long days at Denali National Park (the sled dog training schools were not available on our dates, so I guess she just gets to play at the resort!). We had to purchase propane gas again ($24 for 10 gallons), then got on the road heading to Seward. It had started sunny and beautiful, but as we approached the Cooper's Landing area (where we stayed in Russian River Campground on our way down), the skies turned very dark with black areas, then we hit the rain) - 20 mins later, it cleared and we stopped along the Kenai River for a walk and possible lunch (at 4pm) - we saw a trail from the road's edge, leading sharply downhill through rocks, but seemed only a short distance from the river, so we pressed on for a good view. Yes, it was a dangerous descent, but we'll be ready for Mt Everest after this! It did turn out to be an outrageous rocky outcropping to view the Kenai River! No signs of life in either direction, just bird song and sunshine on the green river. But we had not carried our lunch down to this lookout, so we climbed back to road and decided not to eat at RV because there was no view at the roadside pull off. A couple miles farther on, we saw the sign for Crescent Lake Campground - the first 2 loops went through a campground, with some sights facing the Kenai River, but none of those sights were free. So we chose to follow the road 3 miles down to Quartz Creek, where we read there were about 9 sites for "small RV's" - I felt sure the view would be great at that end since they built a road 3 miles long to get there. So off we go - the old story of gravel road, not so bad at first, but then 1 mile in we start having potholes the size of moon craters in the road! I'm weaving to both edges of the road trying to avoid these huge craters, knowing that I am scrambling the eggs and cracking the dishes at every pothole! Yet, I kept going to see the incredible views at the end!! The end appeared, and NOTHING to view - just some shrubby small campsites, no creek, and about 5 other cars that had made it to the end - no other RV's! So we just followed the loop, took another 30 minutes to get out, and made our way back to the original campsites we had seen. We were never so happy to see paved road, and we pulled into a campsite that did not appear to have any views, but as we followed the trail out the back of our RV, we realized we are on the Kenai River bank which we had viewed from the rock lookout earlier today. Unfortunately, the rains let loose on us as we set up camp here, but so glad we made it off "moon crater road" before the rain turned it all to mud puddles! So we settled inside for a delicious dinner of Costco Sea Salt and Garlic Mahi, fresh broccoli, and apple salad on our fresh grown Homer arugula with a glass of 14 Hands Hot to Trot Washington State red wine!! All ready in 15 minutes and topped off with our Raspberry and Strawberry Rhubarb pie from the Homer Farmer's Market - actually quite tasty!!! And the rain is now gone, sun is out again at 8pm, so maybe one more walk before calling it a day! We only made it 59 miles today, but it was a good trip! And we've accidentally ended with another incredible view! Thinking of you, Becky - peace and calm coming your way!
