Day 40: Seward, again!!

Seward, Alaska, United States
Loving this oceanfront camping site, and the sunny weather, and another great day! Had to shower in the RV again but getting better at the "hug shower" and learning the tricks (don't turn on kitchen water as it alters temp suddenly for the showering victim, and when we are on a slight hill, jumping around in the shower can be extremely dangerous!!). But we felt clean, and took Sara for a walk, but after only a 30 min walk, she was dead in the gravel, still recovering from her adventure day yesterday! We then had a great breakfast overlooking the bay, we even heard there were some whales in the bay this morning! It was time to get out the bikes and explore the city! Unloading the bikes after the dusty, gravel roads we have travelled, means lots of dust and dirt, washing down the bikes by disconnecting the water hose and changing to the non-drinking water hose, rinsing down bikes, and then reconnecting the potable (drinking) water hose. Safety equipment next, helmets and pant leg wraps, backpacks, and we're off at 1:00 pm! Sara now perked up since we are leaving her, but hoping she goes back to sleep! We traveled into downtown Seward, passing several murals which this town is famous for, then past a historic Episcopal Church (circa 1902 with a painting of the resurrection of Christ using local people in the background by a Danish artist), then past the fish processing plant (lovely smell!), and out a gravel road that leads to the end of the road on this peninsula - Lowell Point. As a small history review, Seward is known as an entry site for the gold rushers in 1800's and the beginning of the Iditarod Trail when it was used to transport people to the gold fields and later as a mail route to Nome, Alaska and then as the famous dog sledding race. The trail was closed for use when planes came in, but one winter in the late 1920's they reopened it during a diphtheria crisis when they needed vaccine delivered during the coldest winter weather and planes could not fly. And now it's a little tourist town with lots of fishing, dog sledding, and glacier viewing being their main "crop". So we pedaled out of town to Lowell Point, the "real" end of the road, if you count the gravel pit we traveled over! It wouldn't have been so bad if there hadn't been frequent cars and trucks passing through stirring up the dust and dirt! It was only about 2.5 miles from Seward, but was great scenery until we hit the point - a very rough looking area, like an old time fish camp! There were a couple nicer houses, but not what you see on HGTV Alaska Homes! We did find our way to their beach, the first time we've seen people behaving like they do on Florida beaches - sunning and picnicking. I guess it was finally "warm" enough, but certainly not my idea of warm - I was wearing a fleece shirt over my t-shirt, yet I saw "native Alaskans" (I assume) who were shirtless or in bathing suits! One person was in the water, but wearing a wet suit! And lots of kayakers and a couple fishermen. We walked the beach awhile and then rode back into town - found some shops in town and Zudy's Cafe (in the old train depot - very cute with a great view of the bay!!), but selling a tasty selection of desserts - came away with a couple slices of chocolate cheesecake, peanut butter and espresso for tonight's treat! We stopped at their "Farmer's Market" but it was sold out except for 2 cucumbers and some eggs, but the artist coop that sponsored it was very cute. And by now it was about 5:30 so we headed back to RV to rescue Sara from her confinement - she seems to have recovered from her adventure day yesterday and was ready for a good walk on our beachfront. The beachfront is busy with people walking, building fires, cooking out at their RV's, biking, and generally enjoying the oceanfront. We chose to cook in (don't have a grill and I was very happy to be warm inside) - made our Mahi again, the Brussels sprout/sweet potato hash, and arugula/tomato/duke/feta salad. Then one more long walk along the waterfront and into town to give Sara a good jaunt, and legitimize our cheesecake dessert! Cozy and warm, watching the view of the bay, even get 1 TV channel - life is good!
