Day 43: Seward to Summit Lake, Alaska

Moose Pass, Alaska, United States
Sad to say it's our last day in Seward - time to check out of this gorgeous oceanfront view. First, I made it to church at 10am after walking about 10 blocks, and did get to see the historic painting above the altar at St Peter's Episcopal Church: a common resurrection scene (Jesus and 2 angels), but below is the door of the tomb facing Resurrection Bay with snow covered mountains around the bay, and the people (Alaskan and Eskimo) exclaiming at the door of the tomb - definitely a different take on the story! But painting was in excellent condition, and their priest was a jovial fellow, very informal, wearing his tennis shoes beneath the robe - during the service, a server told him she didn't think the printed hymn was appropriate, so they had a discussion from the altar to the pianist about which hymn would be substituted! I was invited to the Mexican potluck after the service but couldn't stay since we did have check out at noon! I got back to the RV and we had quick breakfast and pulled up stakes. On the road to ... Haven't decided yet! First a quick stop at Safeway for a few groceries, then on the road. We contemplated Exit Glacier, but I've seen my fill of glaciers for now, so on the road. We made a couple stops to look for moose - one was out the road of a maximum security prison (you know how I love that), but didn't want to get too close to that, and did not see any moose either. We have been following a story on the local news about a man they found near an Anchorage hiking trail, who was originally thought to have been assaulted, then a day later was updated to a bear mauling, and now it comes out, that experts have determined it was a moose attack! He is still in ICU and unable to speak, but it has squelched our desire to see a moose up close! Hoping he makes it, we want to hear that story!! We found a forest service campground (Linda's senior pass means a $9/night rate!) at Summit Lake with a campsite lakeside that will be perfect for tonight. LOTS of fishermen in this campground and quite a few more bugs and gnats now that we are away from the ocean, but a little trail down to our lakeside "beach". We also have a nice fire pit, and had bought some pork chops at grocery today, so I rounded up a few half burned logs at other firepits in the area and attempted my own fire - could have bought a bundle of wood from campground host, but wasn't sure I'd get the fire going, and seemed so overkill for 4 little pork chops. With the help of my fire starters, some kindling, and used wood and despite the start of a rain shower, I had a pretty good fire going...and no marshmallows to toast :(. But Linda did a great job on the chops, and I quickly defrosted 2 hamburger patties we had in the freezer so we could have another night of grilled food. We had the leftover brussels/sweet potatoes and I had bought a parsnip and apples from grocery today since cousins Ginny and Bob made me love parsnips last T'giving so we added those to the veggies! And a spinach salad-all consumed lakeside and the sun suddenly came out to give us a beautiful picnic! It was delicious as only camping food can be and we are thankful for the whole experience. Then a walk around the campground - this is no frills, so you will see pics of Linda pumping the water from the well - being a good Pioneer woman! BTW, I believe it was #9 crack on the head for Linda tonight - the fold up ledge in front of door is creating a moon sized crater on her forehead and testing her patience!! I have now added a hanging towel in the doorway when the ledge is down - we'll see if that helps, but she is Alaska woman strong if she can stand all those head bangings!! It was very hard to leave that last view, but this is gorgeous so all is well - except we get very little Verizon reception, no TV channels (want to know how the "moose maulee" is doing), and certainly no internet! Maybe tomorrow!!
