Day 49: Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska, United States
So we still slept in til 10 am today despite being near the Air Force Base, Anchorage Airport, and the train depot - trains, private seaplanes, helicopters, and jets were annoying once we were awake, but never heard them til we realized that checkout was 11am! So jumped up to do the final "dump" since we plan to dry camp for at least the next 2-3 nights - and for the first time, the dump tube got away from me, jumping out of the drain briefly, spewing the ugly stuff!! Fortunately did not get me, but required a complete wipe down of our hoses and electric cords around the area! After that recovery process, we washed ourselves and got out of "Industrial Campground" - driving 6 miles north to Centennial Campground - described in the reviews as a combination of campground and drug rehab all in one! We stayed here one day on our trip south, and I know there were a few sketchy characters, but we decided to take our chances due to the location by Costco, Walmart, Linda's church, and a low cost stay in the city campground! We found a great spot near a good dog walking area and checked in, then fixed lunch while we plotted our afternoon. We wanted to see some Farmer's Markets, so picked the one in South Anchorage known to have more local vegetables - of course, we arrived at 1:45 and found out they closed at 2pm. However, the music act was still playing and we found a great stall with all organic veggies from Palmer, AK - veggies were beautiful, clean - at least 8 different types of greens, potatoes, parsnips, turnips, radishes, and yak meat!!!!! Yak sausage, burgers, etc - I need to look that one up, but believe it's something you would find while climbing Mt Everest!! We got a new stock of arugula and parsnip, and moved on - found the University Lake dog loop trail on edge of Univ of Alaska campus. It was a gorgeous lake (except for the sweet duck families who are just a bird dogs' dreams of good fun!) and we all enjoyed the 1.5 mile loop around the lake, so we did it twice! We also had to beware of "aggressive female beavers" who were protecting their dams and beaverlings! When we finished that, I went by Costco while Linda found her local church nearby. Stocked up on dog food, water bottles, chocolate chip cookies, apples and wine - just the necessities of life! When we got back to our campsite at 7pm, our neighbor Oscar, was grilling out and offered us some sausage that he wouldn't be able to use before flying out - so we offered him some wine and cookies in exchange for also using his fire to cook our pork chops. He is a young guy from Odessa, TX who came up here for a one month hiking holiday, visiting friends in a couple places, and hiking solo in many locations. He grilled his steak and corn, then joined us for dinner at our picnic table - we all agreed it is COLD tonight, probably only 65 degrees, but windy gray clouds blowing in and it feels like winter to us! He hopes to hike the Appalachian Trail in the next couple years so we exchanged emails, and offered him a ride if he makes it to Georgia! By 10pm, we finished dinner dishes and have settled in with the heat on! Linda is still using the electric blanket, but I have to cut off the generator (and electric blanket power soon since it is "quiet hours" in the park!) Rain predicted for tomorrow, a good sleep in day!
