Day 55: Denali National Park

Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska, United States
Oh, 5:30 am came hard for these two late sleepers! The only good news was that the weather looked good this morning and sunrise is at 3:57am (after sunset at 12:19am)!!! So at least we weren't getting up in the dark and walking about a 1/2 mile from Riley Campground to the Wilderness Center to meet our tour/shuttle bus to Wonder Lake. Thank goodness they had coffee at the center, because I can't use the coffee maker before the "generator hours" and that was not at 6am! So we grabbed a bite to eat, carried our lunch with us, and boarded the bus promptly at 6:45 am. As I said the Park is 6 million acres, and the road only goes about 84 miles out to Wonder Lake, with about 5 stops along the way. Bus driver, Tina, gives a running commentary about the park, wildlife, sites, and wilderness survival along the way. She also pulls over for us to photograph any wildlife we "discover" along the way, which was not too plentiful on our trip - we saw a lot of Dall Sheep far away (white dots on the mountain), 1 brown bear far off and a grizzly closer, but hiding in the shrubbery, and a couple caribou. It was good weather, but Denali Mountain is so high that it is usually covered with clouds, so we were fortunate to see the peaks briefly during a break in clouds. Wonder Lake is a large "kettle" lake, formed when glacier ice melted, and is so cold and pure, it doesn't even have fish in it - as a result, the brown bear up here are mostly vegetarian since they can't get fish to eat. The rivers look like a watered down cement water due to the glacier melt, so no fish there either. The vastness of this wilderness is more than I can describe or a picture can show - we rode for 11 hrs today (roundtrip) and only saw a small tip of the park! We also saw a movie about the Denali climbers and how challenging this feat is - ranked up there with a Mt Everest climb, maybe more difficult due to colder temps (-40 degrees in summer) and higher winds (60 -100 mph) on Denali. Either way, we won't be signing up for that adventure! Then we got back to campground to find new warning signs out for "Moose seen in campground" - hope we don't meet on our early hike to the buses!
