Day 57: Denali to Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks, Alaska, United States
Yeah, slept in today after two days of getting up at 5:30 am! And Sara was happy to be back and quite willing to sleep in as well! However, at 10:15 we jumped up and went into fast action since checkout was 11am. Our big task was getting the bikes back on and getting over to RV dump station, which was the nicest we have attended!! Three dump sites and potable water hoses to fill your fresh water tanks, each placed on the appropriate side of the RV - sweet! Altho Riley Campground was very strict on generator use, they were a very nice campground overall. EXCEPT for the prices.... Bought a loaf of bread at the Mercantile yesterday for $8.50, and showers cost $4.50 + .50 if you need a towel! And we saw families with children paying that price for the whole family - think I'd be washing those kids out at the dump station!! We then parked the RV and took a final walk around Denali, giving Sara a good walk, and enjoying a beautiful, warm, sunny day! And then, on the road to Fairbanks - we had debated on going north to Fairbanks, then east back to the Alaska Highway to work our way into Haines, Alaska where we are due to catch the ferry on July 14, and we need to consider where we will stay over July 4th since campgrounds may be full, and it's also the annual Strongman Competition in Tok (the last Alaska town on the highway) - so I'm sure the area will be packed with Strongman competitors, but no worries about Fireworks since forest fires are again burning in the area! The other option was to go a longer route back through Anchorage, but we have seen that route, so Fairbanks, here we come! The drive through Nenana Canyon north of Denali is gorgeous - great lookout points high above the Nenana and Tanana Rivers. There were a couple little towns that we drove through to feel the local culture - Nenana was a little scary, kind of like a Western Ghost Town except the neon OPEN sign was on in the Saloon! The next town was Ester where we found Main Street, once again the only thing open was a Saloon, but the road was a rushing mud river as it was now pouring down rain! There was an old sign that said it was the site of the new town library, but the sign was peeling paint already! So back on the road into Fairbanks. Signs of civilization start at Airport Road, where we find the International Airport, Fred Myer, and Safeway, and a couple RV campgrounds. But after a quick shopping trip into Fred's, we confirm that we can boondock overnight (for free) and get Linda to a Catholic Church just down the street. So we have now set up camp at Fred's, fixed dinner, and are able to get 2 major TV channels! We had thunderstorms with lightning for about 3 hrs, and now it's suddenly sunny at 10:15pm. We are within 200 miles of the Arctic Circle - where we are expected to have 21 hours and 42 minutes of daylight today (sunrise 3:03am, sunset 00:45 am!!). We'll head to Chena Hot Springs tomorrow, for both the healing waters and the scenery along the Chena River, then return to Fairbanks to stock up on food supplies and gas for the drive to Haines.
