Badger, Alaska, United States
We were up til 3am last night finishing our blog in our Walmart site, so did not feel too perky this am when I woke to the rain showers. We got moving slowly and made our first stop at Sam's Club (stocking up on items to get us down the Alaska Highway since grocery stores were non-existent and prices were high at the Quick Marts); next was a stop in town to see a couple shops we saw on yesterday's "Death March" to Pioneer Park, except the stores were closed at 9pm when we finally got back; and then we have plans for an early dinner at Silver Gulch Brewery. The Art Gallery was all Alaska made arts - one artist did folk art type bears and they are having her showing starting tomorrow, so we were invited back for the wine and cheese opening. We also liked the puffin Walrus tusk "mask" for $4200 - walrus tusk is only available for art use by native artists, so has become very rare. We walked downtown to a few other shops, then went back to the RV for a 20 minute drive out to Fox, home of Silver Gulch Brewery - slogan, "Fairbanks, where the people are unusual and the beer is unusually good!" Along the way, we saw the Alaska Pipeline again (last time in Valdez) - this is the halfway mark for it's full length up to Prudhoe Bay. That's when the rain started again, heavy with lightening. But, good to be doing something indoors now! We found Silver Gulch Brewery across the road from Howling Dog Saloon (HooDoo beer served there), and that is what made up Fox, Alaska!! The Silver Gulch serves food, but HooDoo brewery does not, so we went for the food option. Linda had the salmon dinner with citrus/cilantro marinade and grilled veggies, and I opted for the Black and Blue Bison burger. And then we could get "taster" glasses of their beers brewed on site - they also had a huge selection of international beers (German, Czech, Irish, Japanese...). I had the Coldfoot Pilsner and Old 55 Pale Ale, Linda had Tundra Apple Ale and their homemade root beer. Everything was excellent and we went away much too full! Tonight we drove to southern Fairbanks, a town called North Pole! We're at the Riverview RV Park on the Chena River (this River is around every corner of this city) - it's very close quarters here, but we have luxuries like full hookups, 8 TV channels, showers, laundry and were promised WiFi altho we have been unable to sign onto it (and the office is always closed when you discover this!). Linda just talked to her sister, Valerie, who gave us the scoop on Dr Dee, Alaska Vet (probably the show they were filming at yesterday's dog park visit) - an actual show on Animal Planet, so maybe it was a legit film, and Sara will become a star! And finally start earning a living!! So plans are to be early to bed, and explore North Pole, looking for the "Big Man" tomorrow - he's probably vacationing down south, but maybe we'll find him or the Mrs at home!
