Day 62: North Pole, Alaska

North Pole, Alaska, United States
Another rainy morning, but was glad we didn't have any pressing plans, or so I thought. We slept in, made the coffee, and was reading a travel newsletter that reminded me of the Health Certificate required of dogs crossing into Alaska - it needs to be dated within 30 days of travel, and Sara's was done in April in Georgia - so I begin researching where the closest vets are to our ferry. Problem is, we drive out of Alaska into Canada and then back into Alaska to get to Haines, then take a ferry to Canada! The border people never asked to see her Health Certificate on the way in (the Rabies certificate was all they wanted), but now I realize there are no vets after here before we cross the border. I sure don't want to find out at the border that I would have to drive back to Fairbanks to get that Certificate! Quick call a vet in North Pole, get an appointment for 2:30 pm (they just had a cancellation), run to get laundry washed and dried (oops, didn't get it dried), had to leave for vet with it still in laundry), saw vet (they were very sweet, efficient, and provided some Xanax when I told them about Sara's anxiety at being left alone in the RV), rushed back to get wrinkled laundry, then drove back to town of North Pole at 4pm. So much for our quiet day! We hadn't realized North Pole is a whole Christmas themed town - streets are named in theme, all street lights are candy canes, and there is the Santa Claus House where the original "letter to Santa" was sent. And a Safeway grocery store, our main destination, since this may be the last grocery store for many days. And, gas/propane refills and hot showers to send us down the Alaska Highway tomorrow. The RV park is completely filled tonight, the holiday spirit is alive for 4th of July - adults, kids, dogs all out playing games, biking, grilling til 11pm - and it's still bright as day! The rain came and went all day, but mostly clear tonight. So after our writing, it's time to get some sleep - we'll drive to Tok tomorrow, having called to make reservations since we will be in peak holiday time.
