Tok, Alaska, United States
Great day! Not going anywhere, leisurely breakfast, coffee X 2 and chocolate smoothie X 1! It started out sunny and we did walk Sara, but squandered our time by making phone calls, and then it was raining at 2pm when we wanted to go out for our bike ride. So we made a few more phone calls and by 4pm rain had cleared and we set out on a bike ride around Tok - actually found a map of Tok in Camprgound office - showed a couple back streets we could explore and the bike path down the Alaska Highway is very nice (i.e. Flat and paved!); it also runs beside the ATV trail, so you're not competing with motorized vehicles! The sites of Tok were not so exciting, but the ride was fun and invigorating, all 10 miles, and then we got home to Tundra RV land and put dinner on. Being July 4th weekend, we pulled out all the stops - flat iron steak and broccoli on the outdoor firepit, and Linda's sweet potatoe fries! The dark clouds were hovering, but we finished grilling before the raindrops started. Delicious dinner and the grill is still hot, so we pulled out some hamburgers to grill for another night's dinner - almost ate those tonight, but we have to pace ourselves! Now moved on to brownies in the convection oven - remember the trick there is to set the temp 25 degrees higher than directed, and jump up every 5 mins to restart the convection oven - a small price to pay for fresh brownies! We put our flags out (have 2 American flags ready for the occasion) and have to be up early for the Tok 4th of July Parade at 11am!! Thanks to having 1 TV channel, we are able to follow the Denali bear story - they had closed Savage Creek Campground at Denali due to a bear attack, and now we hear the bear has attacked another person so they will be forced to kill this grizzly. We wondered how they know which bear did it, and after a little research, find that they do DNA testing and analysis of human remains on the bear to determine if he is the guilty perpetrator. Everyone is also updating us about the Glacier incident where a Park Ranger was also killed by a grizzly bear while biking in the park - actually rounded a corner and literally ran into the bear, surprising the bear, which is not good! Remember, as we've been taught, brown bear threat: don't run, raise tall and act threatening; moose threat: run, get behind a tree; grizzly bear threat: say your prayers! Thank goodness we seem to be demagnetized to wildlife! But we'll be careful, rest assured!!
