Day 65: Tok, Alaska

Tok, Alaska, United States
It actually felt like a holiday since there's no traveling again today. We had a leisurely breakfast, then set out with Sara to see the Tok 4th of July Parade - turns out it didn't come down the route we thought so we almost missed it, and ended up running from behind to catch up to it! I had stopped to get a picture, so Linda was ahead of me with Sara, when some people in a pickup truck asked me if I wanted to ride in the parade with them - at first I said "no", but then thought about how surprised Linda would be when I rode by in the parade, so I jumped aboard. I asked them what parade etiquette was besides waving, should I call out Happy 4th of July? One young children said, "well, you could say, "Jesus loves you"! - and so I did! Turns out they were a mission group from Arkansas and Alabama, doing a mission trip to Tanacross, a native Indian town a few miles down the road! And, yes, Linda was very surprised as I road by in the pickup, didn't even recognize me, and then she and Sara had to jump on board also! So let's cross "being in a parade" off the bucket list also! At the end of the parade route was a small fairground, booths with games, food, raffles. Linda bought a ticket for the Outlander (I thought that was a Subaru), but it was a cute little red ATV!! We really could have used that on the back of the RV, but alas, we didn't win! There was also the StrongMan competition - throwing an empty beer keg over a bar in the air (that would be 50 lbs of awkward weight over a 19 foot bar in the air - I don't know how they didn't kill themselves!), climbing the greased pole, arm wrestling, the whomping big fish throw, and the moose throw for kids (thank goodness it was a stuffed moose) to name a few of the games! We saw the goats walking on leashes, the 4H Club pig, and the contest for largest moose antlers. All a good time! We walked back to our campground, where Sara collapsed, so was good timing for us to get in a bike ride - the skies looked threatening, and we had some rain during the parade, but cleared this afternoon for a cool bike ride. Then back to the RV to do some housekeeping tasks - everyone gets a shower today, even Sara, and cleaning house in the RV, and washing blankets today. Tomorrow we leave for Haines, AK but have to go through Canada to get there, so we may not be getting internet access for a few days (except that I now know Canadian visitor centers have free internet) so don't worry if you don't hear from us for a couple days (it may take us 3-4 days to get through Canada).
