Day 68: Haines Junction, Canada to Haines, Alaska

Haines, Alaska, United States
Another gorgeous day - warm and sunny! We left our Lake Kathleen site and continued on the Haines Highway toward Haines. First off, I spot something big in the road - I thought "deer", but then remembered where I was - sure enough, MOOSE standing in road!! As we approached slowly, he jogged off the road, picking up his feet awkwardly, like his shoes were too heavy for his feet! Linda had lost track of her camera under her paperwork, so there was a lot of shouting and scurrying to find a camera, and by then Mr Moose was up the hill, giving us a picture of his back end! But, wildlife in it's natural form! I will include the wildlife that did stop for our pictures - as we drove into Million Dollar Falls Campground, a bunny sat boldly in our path, did not move as the RV approached! We were very close before he finally moved on. We took a short hike to the falls and were rewarded by a beautiful view of a narrow River through a canyon, dropping into falls, with a boardwalk along the upper hillside. We came away from the falls and ate our lunch at the side of the river. Also, chatted with a couple from Michigan who gave us some ideas on activities in Haines - have already taken their advice on campgrounds. Then back on the road, enjoying the view of "alpine prairies" - that means vast open lands with rushing rivers, and mountain ranges along the edge of the prairie. The prettiest section of road since Valdez! Haines Highway is an award winning National Scenic Byway and has the smoothest surface I've seen anywhere in Alaska! We again crossed the border into Alaska, pleasant border guards! As we approached Haines, we see wide river beds (salmon areas with fish wheels to catch large quantities), "glaciated mountains", and finally enter a cute town of Haines. Had 2 campgrounds to choose from, but wanted hookups - Oceanside had a great view, but horrible parking; HitchUp RV Park has no view, but is very well kept and did give us a "deal" on a weekly rate (one week til we get the ferry to Prince Rupert) - the deal came up to $45/day with the extras of "electricity for air conditioning", cable TV, water, sewer, electric so here we are! Our neighbors from Cincinnati, OH were very welcoming and gave us the low down on the ferry - sounds scary to drive on, may require backing in, and their RV hit bottom!!!! But we've settled in, have our chairs out, dinner at the picnic table, but no grill :(
