Day 69: Haines, Alaska

Haines, Alaska, United States
Today we're in planning mode - spent the morning looking into what to do from Haines, had breakfast outside on the picnic table, and did some laundry and showers. By 2pm we were ready to explore the town by bikes - checked out the grocery store, browsed the town - a very cute area reminiscent of an old Western town, but with totem poles; then we biked out to Fort Seward, an area that used to be an Army base but closed in 1942, is now little shops, a distillery, a totem carving center, and restaurants. We stopped to have dinner at Fireweed, which did have the most eclectic menu of restaurants in Alaska - we had grilled salmon and halibut, quinoa/black bean/ edamame salad, sugar snap peas in coriander butter that were all good, but we couldn't help drool at the site of their brick oven pizzas. Next time! Then we had to ride up a pretty steep hill, with groceries! Back at the RV, Sara wants her walk. I'm also battling some allergic reaction - hives that are driving me crazy with itching. I'm on Benadryl and hydrocortisone cream, but have no idea what caused this. We also firmed up plans to go to Skagway next Tues and found a pet sitter to take care of Sara while we are gone. We also heard that my sister-in-law's father passed away yesterday, so we were greatly saddened by this news - Norm was loved by all and I also had a special fondness for this gentle man! My condolences to his whole family.
