Day 70: Haines, Alaska

Haines, Alaska, United States
I had a bad night with this allergic rash - hives all over despite increased Benadryl dose - can't imagine what would cause it - clothes detergent or the Homer wine we had night before last? Now adding Zyrtec and steroid cream to my regimen, and not finishing that bottle of wine! But it was Farmer's Market morning in Haines, and it was only one block away so no driving required. We took Sara and set out at 11 am for the market. It turns out this fairground which hosts the SE Alaska State Fair, was also the set for the movie "White Fang" and is actually a reincarnation of a gold mine town (now I'll need to rent the movie!). It was a cute little town, but very small farmer's market. However they did have the veggie of our desire, fresh arugula! Yet no tomatoes - you would think tomatoes would be very common! BTW, the tomatoes we bought for $13 at the Fairbanks market were excellent, they say because of their 21 hours of sunlight daily. Which reminds me to comment on our shock last night when it started getting dark here at 10pm, and actually totally dark by 11pm - we were shocked to go out at night and need a flashlight!! So I guess less sun means no tomatoes here in Haines - lots of lettuce, rhubarb, cabbage, broccoli. We headed back to the RV and disconnected so we could drive down Beach Road to the Battery Point Trailhead. It said limited parking so we actually parked at Portage Cove lookout and added another half mile to the hike. The hike went through rain forest that paralleled Portage Cove and Lynn Canal - the big bodies of water leading out to Alaska's inner passage (where we will ferry to get to Canada next week). It had been cloudy and drizzly this morning but cleared in time for our hike. Sara met several dog friends on the hike (one pitiful dog had collapsed and owners had brought in a wheelbarrow to get her out - apparently was elderly and just couldn't walk that far), but Sara thoroughly enjoyed being leash free through forest and then out to the beaches. The beaches are gravel and Kelgaya Point was a large rock outcropping with views of Haines, blue-green water of Lynn Canal, mountains and strangest of all, are the spattering of "Christmas trees" on the beach - just doesn't seem right, but it is beautiful. Hiked about 2.5 hrs and got back just in time to drop Linda at church - which left me to back into our campsite without my guide! I did pretty well, if I do say so myself - didn't run over my "divider shrub" or water spout that separates our sites nor was any human injured in the process! Now time for more Benadryl and getting the dinner on - arugula apple salad for sure!
