Day 71: Haines, Alaska

Haines, Alaska, United States
It was a lazy Sunday morning - Cousin Lynn had the nerve to call at 11am and ask if we were still sleeping?! Not really, but certainly not up and going yet :). So we made a good breakfast, my new favorite being a fried egg with arugula and feta cheese on Dave's Killer Bread (reading the label tells us Dave's was started and run by people with a criminal background who want a second chance in life, from Milwaukie, Oregon) - it's that bread we are paying $7 per loaf but hope it's giving second chances!! Then we unhooked RV and drove to grocer (only place I can see to buy more Benadryl since I am still itching) and then out to Chilkoot Lake State Park. We had planned to find a trail there, but when I asked about trails at the campground office, she said she wouldn't get off the main road in that park due to large population of bears! So we parked halfway into the park and decided to get our exercise walking the rest of way. As soon as we started walking, we hit a sign that says "NO walking this stretch of road if any bears are seen", so that made us a little nervous but we saw no bears, so continued our walk. Apparently, it ran beside the stretch of road that is where salmon are funneled and counted, so I guess the bears know it as a great place to get a meal! Fortunately, we had no encounters and enjoyed a beautiful walk along the Chilkoot Lake and Lutak Inlet. A few men, women, and kids fishing in river, a couple rafters and kayakers, and many picnicking families - didn't seem so dangerous, but we kept a sharp eye out to avoid a bear confrontation! We left there and drove out the other side of town to Chilkat State Park - this was 10 miles out the south side of town, down a long dirt road that suddenly dumped you onto a peninsula surrounded by water on 2 sides - great water and mountain views. It's been a rather dreary day, so it also feels cool, not very inviting to be at water's edge, so we headed back to the campsite, hungry again. Linda did laundry and I cooked dinner, then headed out for a walk with Sara since I want her to be well exercised before Linda and I leave on a kayaking trip in the morning. Another great day in Haines, AK - I think one of my favorite towns!
