Day 74: Last day in Haines, Alaska

Haines, Alaska, United States
A slow day, getting ready for the big voyage - 36 hour ferry ride starts tomorrow at 10 am July 14th from Haines, Alaska to Prince Rupert, Canada where we land at 1am on July 16th. I would guess no internet while on ferry, and probably for a couple days after we land and get to Jasper area. Today we prepared for our entry to Canada by gassing up the RV, filling propane, dumping tanks, buying groceries that will be more expensive in Canada. Nothing can remain refrigerated since RV will have LP gas turned off for the voyage. We tried to give Sara a good walk by stopping at the Chilkat area to walk the beach there - I thought I wanted to get my feet wet because it was hot on land, but the winds made it quite chilly out at the water. So Sara ran and we briefly put our feet in the water! We also washed our bikes and the RV since we need to bring the bikes inside the RV for the ferry (they charge by length of the RV so to make it shorter we took bike rack and bikes off) - this whole ferry ride is about $1300 for a 25 ft RV, berth for 2, and pet fee; the neighbors told us tonight that they would have to pay $4000+ for their Class A RV/car! But it does save a lot of driving on the Alaska Highway so I hope it's worth it! We are still feeling so bad for Sara who has to stay below deck in the RV for the whole trip except at port calls when we go down to take her out for walks - we are not allowed to stay in our RV with her, so she will be crowded in with both the bikes. We did make time for a lunch stop at Big Al's Salmon Shack - I"m starting to miss Alaska already, had to have one more fix of salmon! They had all fried fish, but it was Rockfish and Salmon fish and chips - a bit greasy, but tasty! Then we came back to the RV park and did some housekeeping on the RV, laundry, and gabbed with our neighbors - they are retired military from Tennessee and are full time RVer's, they have started working at the campgrounds so they receive free campsites in return. They have been travelling the country doing this for a couple years and there are actually books of available positions at campgrounds around the country. And then we came in to make dinner, make a batch of brownies for the trip, and pack our overnight bags for our ferry "stateroom" - I'm not expecting much of this room! So don't be alarmed if we can't post for a few days, but I'm sure we'll have some good stories by the time we get back to communications!
