Bulkley-Nechako, British Columbia, Canada
What a great night's sleep last night - Linda couldn't even remember the campground when we talked about it tonight and I said that's because we never saw it, except to drive in, unload the bikes, and get out by noon this morning. I had visions of getting a bike ride in, but after sleeping til 10, then calling Dad, getting breakfast, and walking Sara, it was time to go. The town of Terrace looked very nice, had bike trails, kayaking, hiking trails, and a collection of totem poles - wish we had more time. Have figured out that we must make some time if I am to make it to the family reunion on August 6th in Pittsburgh, and we want time in Jasper/Banff. We are driving I-16 eastward, seeing many charming towns and following the very wide Skeena River and now with mountains rising in front and beside us - yet the road is a very pleasant drive. We also note that several of the Visitor Centers along this road have free dump stations that gave us an opportunity to do more dry camping. We stopped in Smithers for groceries and gas (looking forward to Prince George where we hear of a Costco!), then stopped in Telkwa for a picnic lunch above the river. All the towns are so cute, decorated with lots of flowers (growing like they're on steroids!) and the people have a cute little accent and are very friendly - love this stretch of Canada! Pressing on, we finally decide to stop at Fraser Lake at 7pm - this whole district is full of lakes, so it was hard to choose one for the night. We chose well - this is Beaumont Provincial Park on Lake Fraser - no hookups, but a gorgeous lake (got my feet wet!), a beautiful sunset, and a dinner grilled on our open firepit! Lots of people here, 90+ campsites nearly full, lots of kids. And it's a full moon - couldn't be nicer!!!
